50 years? No way we will last that long. We have $50 trillion of un-funded handouts promised between now and 2050. We have generations of people with hands out now. Anyone $50K on down is getting something, most don't even know it. We are done, beyond the ability to change and come back.
I truly believe that there will be another "paradigm shift" back to the land and becoming a more self/local co-op existance. I saw a piece called "Prophets of Doom" and they explained the current modern meal purchased at the local Grocery store comes from an average of 1200 miles away. That totally different from say even 50 years ago in the 60's.
My family is fortunate to still hold the house and farmland where my Mother grew up in rural South Ga. Decent bugout location.... I agree that there are some bargains on old farm property..Last edited by megalops; 02-18-2012, 10:14 PM."If you can't win - Wreck someone who can!"Comment

I don't believe in Doomsday scenarios but, I am realistic to believe we are very possibly headed towards a worse than 1930's dustbowl era. Just a different flavour and approach. In the past it was abrupt, this time it is far more incremental because we are so distracted.Nortavlag Bulc

It's not really doomsday that I am thinking of, unless Iran sets off a nuke. I see food shortages, fuel shortages, power outages. People in large cities will panic and swarm. Roads and bridges will fall into really bad condition, it's already happening. Food stores have about 12 hours of stock in case of panic, I have seen it on a snow warnings. Just think Ray, if something tragic happened right now like the New Madrid fault going off, it would cause complete panic. The Moormans have a 72 hour travel package and a 1 year home supply of food and water. my 2 cents I think we can learn from the preppers myself.Comment

The bad part is in some of the parts of Patriot Act or later laws like the NDAA, storing food could be useless because you might be deemed a t e r r o r i s t if you store more than 7 days worth of food. I'd have to look it up....

India and Pakistan have hordes of citizenry who would gleefully move to one of those Chi cities to replace the missing workers. $200 a month is mega bux to the extreme poor. Facing starvation, even cheap wages look better then watching your surrounding family slowly die from malnutrition.

Are we forgetting that the U.S. takes what it wants? Like said before, we have military in basically every "big" country in the world. Us bullies will be just fine. The reason the rest of the world hates us is the same reason we'll always have our necessities. as long as the gov't keeps blowing all my $ on military BS, I'll have everything I need to survive. That is until our "allies" turn on us.
The only reason we have allies is because they fear us. Once they realize that there is strength in numbers, we're effed.Comment

Rumdog I have a lot of respect for you as our pathes have crossed on many times in posts but trust me you as a nation are not the threat you think you are . We respect you as a neighbor cause we have fought country to country and for the same cause . As a Canadian we consider you as a big brother but trust me there is absolutely no fear , at least not from the north .
We are ready man bring it on.............Attached FilesNecessity is the mother of invention.............

Great article Tony. Who would have thought it? That even the enslaved Chinese worker can dig out from under oppression and rise to a level where they can make demands on wages earned? And its not due to Unions or Fair Labor practices. But simple math? The rich need to sell their products. The dependency is on qualifyed, skilled workers who are in high demand.

40years ago China was the same.. products were crap...40 years on Id prefer Cn manufactured electronics, vehicles, , than any manufactured in US/AU due ridiculous labor costs, and massive manufacturing costs... not to mention the QC of some local stuff is garbage !
India/Pakistan are in that gestational stage.. give them a decade or so to catch up and they may well birth major global manufacturing empires.
Time to buy shares in curry production ........

Doc , I respect you a lot, but the technolgy comes from America and Europe and then is farmed off to Asian countries to produce the products...cheap labour and then we buy these products, where does the shame belong...Wallmart were and are still a user of this business practice and that is one reason I never enter their stores and I have been in their business negotiations and it it is not a cool situation.

100% agree.
China was( and still is ) a poor country.. foreign investment arrived to build factories .... cheap labor and few government tariffs the attraction.. these products then head 'back home'.
Numerous mainland US icons have sent their building to Cn, and they label 'packaged and designed in USA'.
Dell, INTEL, APPLE, HP, Microsoft, ... etc etc ad nauseum
Ditto every other 'western' economy where labor is oft the highest cost component of a build.
Plagiarism is rife between countries, sure...
Amusingly cloned spares produced in Cn for autos are often better than originals.. go figure.
We each have a history of exploiting their cheap labor force when they travel abroad..
Sorry Doug .. so much to say and so little space.
This deserves a decent bottle of scotch shared to mull the destinations our future economies.
Your place, or mine ?
