This is one that has me a bit buggered too but my best guess is that the sponsons are flooded at rest (why ??) and the open rear allows them to drain.....fast !

Some shovels are square on the nose and some are round or pointy.
The square or flat nose is more for coal or aggregate and the round is for soil or clay.
I have 4 shovels that are all different. DO NOT use a short handle coal shovel to try to shift wet clay.
The shovel nose hydro is very much a shovel shape in plan view and in profile or cross section.
Get a proper shovel and lay in on the ground face down and you will see what it is all about.
