Or for a lot less than $100....
I've been using a Weller 40 amp iron with 1/4" chisel tip for years, it works great. Some like more amps and that's fine, the real secret is the wide chisel tip and high quality solder (57/43). And of course, you have to know how to solder - even the best tools won't mask a poor technique.

      Nice station BTW.

Absolutely I used to dread soldering. Bounced around from one device to another and my solder joints looked awful. Then at the 2012 FE Nat's a respected racer recommended this

        http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...ring%20station

It was B/O at the USA warehouse (more are currently in transit to the location) and I finally scored one. It's a knockoff of the more expensive ($89) original. Comes with a needle tip but for $10 on Ebay I got a 10-pack of assorted tips and now it's in constant use. I don't dread soldering anymore and my solder joints are quite nice. As Jay pointed out, technique is all important regardless of which device you use. It literally took me years (I'm a slow learner) to find what works for me but my personal "system" combined with this device, my favorite solder, and a few other tricks makes soldering way less intimidating for me.

            +1

Bought a Weller station (TC202 base w/TC201P wand) back in 1984, still going strong. Here's a used one... http://www.ebay.com/itm/WELLER-TC202...item19eb6bbb6d - don't know the seller, threw that out so you could see what they look like - it was long ago replaced by something newer.

600F / 700F / 800F tips of every shape / size you could ask for still widely avail on the net - http://www.apexhandtools.com/brands/...t2=PT%20Series

Solders / unsolders all sizes of bullets, Trax connectors and any / everything else I could ask of it with ease.
Trust me, spend the xtra $$ to start with (preferably on USA made product) and you'll never look back

Thx all for the suggestions. Found this brand new in box on my local Craigslist for $40. Originally $120 at Radio Shack.

I just ordered this. It is three times the price of the HK one, but it is in stock and has a digital temperature display and extra tips.

I am very hard on soldering irons it seems... I've burnt out my orange Weller 80watt. They have newer ones on ebay for about $30 to USA, $50 to Canada

I also have a Weller soldering station but, do not know how to use it or know how to set it up for soldering heavy wire like 8G or 10G wire.

If I post a pic can you guys fill in the blanks please??

It's a Weller EC1001 and goes up to 850 degrees. The iron has a pointed tip.

                      Any advice is very welcome.

                        Ray,

A chisel tip works real good on connectors. Check EBay or here :

Hi Ray, it's a good unit. I used to use one till it had a big fall. Need a good chisel tip on it, 60 watts so it's not quite as quick on the 8mm connectors but will do the job with a good tip, crank it up and go

                              Ray,
I have that wand also (TC201P), you can find tips here... http://www.apexhandtools.com/brands/...t2=PT%20Series - plenty of choices.

Unscrew the barrel at the base of the handle - it's knurled, slide it up and the tip pops right out. I have several for my unit for various needs.

Great unit, think you'll like it, wish mine had adjustable temp. Your model came out several years after I got mine.
