The Garmin E-Trex will do Average and max speed. Ebay has many used ones. -
Garmin Forerunner 201. This is the BEST one. MUCH smaller than the etrex. Here's a good deal going on a used one on ebay. There is also the Foretrex 101 but not rechargeable, etc.

Yep! Unlike car and boat GPS's which start recording max speeds as soon as you turn them on, you have to make sure you hit the start button on the Forerunner.Mike Chirillo
