Unfortunately I'm not in the market, but I am an air traffic controller and was curious if this unit or any of the portables GPS's on the market are certified for IFR flight.

I doubt a portable would be certified for IFR.

One of my friends has a homebuilt with a Tomtom velcroed to the dash. But he's always VFR.

I know many of the private guys carry the aviation specific portable GSP's and they are much more accurate than the VOR's and NDB's. But if a pilot if flying instrument flight rules, they cannot legally use them because the units are not IFR certified. So we have to stick with the 1950's airways and radials and 30 year old equipment that fails constantly. Oh well. Thanks!

You are right. I do not know of any portable that you can get from GPS store shelf with certification. And yes, this one is very accurate is insane. You can program ILS landing in to it and it will land you so right is scary. Never mind other functions this unit has in it. One of my best is the airport maps, detailed taxiways and frequencies. Wicked piece of navigational tool.
