Are these things waterproof?

They come with a fully waterproof case, and several different mounts.

How deep are they waterproof to?

60 meters or 197 feet. I use a contour and it floats in it's waterproof case. Dont know about the hero so I cant judge. Contour is smaller than the hero an I use my android phone to connect via Bluetooth for live view but not on recording view. My second choice was the hero but I had the xtra money at the time so I bought the contour. Pro's and con's on both so It's really personal preference.
