I have just watched the video. He makes very obvious points but they clearly need addressing. Another point I would make is that with so many different sites all wanting passwords. How can you remember them all? . You can either let your PC remember the password (not a good idea since even formatting this data can be retrieved) or you can use the same one for multiple less important sites and different passwords for the important ones. The key seems to be your email more than ever now. It opens up the world to every site. I know some sites I have joined will send my username and password to my email.

I recently remember the Sony Hacking where millions of users bank details were stolen because Sony was not as secure as they thought. Months before the Hacking even happened I had removed my details to which they then confirmed were permanently deleted, but upon going to purchase an item through PSN (playstation network) my details somehow magically no longer needed to be entered and were recovered showing that Sony had not permanently deleted what I had told them, but keep it on file!!. I wonder now If I could wage a court battle on that but I lost nothing.

I run AVG on my PC (not the free version!!!) It tells me that I have had several attacks on my computer through watching that youtube video on hacking.... I guess someone is angry.

For some reason I can keep track of most of my passwords in my head. You have to use your imagination and draw from things very early in childhood that never get talked about in the present. I'm just odd that way but, I do forget sometimes.

I guess it depends how many sites you are on as well. I have heard it said "Use a different password for every site" I kind of disagree and I think this is the problem as well. I have over 50 sites which need logging into from time to time. Most are just forums, then you have auction sites, advert sites, money sites, banking....in order of importance. Passwords getting longer with importance.

Noone can remember all there passwords. I have over 25 easily.

Just make a spreadsheet in excel or word with your sites, usernames and passwords in them. Simple... You can then password protect the file for extra security.

If you don't feel safe keeping this file on your PC just put it on a flash drive that you can take out of your PC and keep in a safe place.

Ok i watched the video and I honestly didn't learn anything new. Data mining is and old ploy and has been developing since day one of the computer generation. This just goes to show you should never open or volunteer anything no matter how convincing it looks. Contact the reputable companies directly ie banks, paypal and credit unions.

Better yet, don't be so forthcoming with the information you share with the public. I don't tweet, but I have myspace and facebook, as well as numerous forum accounts and financial sites. I only have a handful of passwords that I rotate on a regular basis. They are configured alphanumeric and long enough to be accepted pretty much anywhere. I never write them down, refer to them or mention them to anyone, not even my mom. And I have 0 clues on my sites to give away any clues.

it's really not that hard, just don't brag about yourself and tell john q public your life story and volunteer everything in it.

GSBUICKMAN please explain why you think MS Security Essentials is such a bad product. Norton has been bloated and bad for several years.
Hiya Jim, I know Norton has gone downhill but there are die hards that swear 360 is da bomb " well it is literally " he he he he he he. As far as Microsoft goes their software lulls you into a false sense of security before it extracts money from your wallet.

In a head to head test of the top rated similar programs it failed miserablly, par for the course for MS. They actually pay hackers to design things for them that will infect the MS operating systems. That way they they can collect the $ for the "fixes" and apply them to updates, service packs and other garbage.

Ms has been crooked from the start. Look how bill gates got his start, he sold his friends program to the Japanese. Then he went and begged his friend for the program and told him what he done. Thats MS morals at work for ya.

              Here's one for ya

I had Norton 360 on my laptop. Norton said "security breach, shutting down" all the time. In the end my laptop was soooo slow because of Norton I stopped using them both.

It's the world we live in where information is equity...

Some the replies above are simple BS.
Ms pay hackers to crack Ms products , and they make money from the free rollout updates....
                  Yep, that makes sense

Reviews of software are frequently biased to the presentation media sponsors.

Yes, Norton securities can be an enthusiasm killer ... slows slow Pcs .. however on decent equip there is negligible change to performance/functionality.
Ms/Apache/Linux/Oracle Servers thrive on Symantec security.
Their client/server packages are paramount in data cloud security.
Yes, I have 9 (of 31) Servers running Symantec. edit: 10/31

Good question! My bank requires several codes to enter it online. Paypal requires a password and the bank becomes open.... You can set up a security key on paypal though for extra protection.

You can use an off-PC storage system such as the one on the Iron Key secure drive to store all you account passwords...Iron Key also has a resident FireFox browser and desktop so if you are using a public computer none of the information ever makes it to the public PC (just don't use an unsecured WiFi connection)...it all stays on the Iron Key. If you loose your Iron Key it will self-destruct "Mission Impossible" style if someone makes more than 10 tries at the password...

I have been hacked before by a website that i had to create an account on to purchase some goods. Low and behold the very next day someone had hacked my PayPal as I was stupid enough to use the same password, and thy obviously had my email. So be careful what you sign up for and as hard as it is, use different passwords for every site, I have a method that a have a similar password for all but reference to its use for the purpose, making it easy to remember each one, but still make them all different. Live and learn!

I use same pwd for all forums.
                            1x 16key hexadecimal for bank
                            1x 8key hex for paypal ( M'card )
                            1x 8key hex for internet provider/email.
                            4 separate passwords.

Sux to get hacked... helped enough ppl recover funds to know it aint fun.

I do all payments online, lot of ebay and paypal.. check balances frequently.
Cash is for lunch and drinks down the local.
Once had unidentified amounts drawn.. sum ~$300 .. had used ccard in model store in HK (not HC !) .. the eftpos scanned card details for sale .. and started <$25 transactions that didnt need sign/PIN...I changed card# when it was detected... bank traced and returned all funds... Id now use travel card with limited funds ( not traveled much lately, but that's another story ! )... also changed model store !

I received some emails looking like they come from Paypal. Every time I use Paypal I log on only the Paypal website.
I use Mc Afee VirusScan but it won' t help me to protect my account ...
