no jailbreaking unlocks apple software it has to be unlocked from at@t carrier to be used in t-mobile and other phones that require sim card

It takes about 10 minutes to unlock it on 4.0 firmware now but you've got to have a carrier that uses a sim. I actually got the Iphone 4 the day it came out but it's a POS and gave it to my GF and am using the 3gs 32gb again. I'll buy another one when they fix all the crap that's screwed up on the Iphone 4. I'm on T-mobile, you can unlock it straight from the Safari browser now it's very easy.
