A great 70's era unlimited hydroplane racing movie. ....

    Hello everybody

I got home late yesterday evening & caught the last half of of a movie called "Madison" from 2005'. it was about a man and his racing team that run the Madison hydroplane in the 71' Madison, IN regatta, against the miss budweiser, miss notre dame & the atlas vans hydro. I thought it seemed like a pretty good family movie so I thought I'd share for those that don't know about it....

They actually used RC boats in the making of this movie.

Really ?, Idk about that . I'm definitely going to have to rent this movie and watch it all the way through, but keeping a close eye on detail. nothing runs like a blown big block nitro motor, that's not something you can simulate .....

Wrong only in the crash scene were the rc boats used the other racing scenes were real boats mainly from the Hydro and Raceboat Museum

I should have put more detail in my post. Yes - it was only in the crash scene that RC boats were used, and Yes - they used restored/rebuilt full size boats for the majority of the movie. I don't think my post was "wrong" it just wasn't very specific. My apologies...

My dad called me the other night to tell me about this movie. I was heading out the door so I recorded it on the DVR and watched it a few nights ago. My wife and I both really enjoyed it. I'm not sure how I missed the movie when it came out originally, but sure am glad we watched it. The majority of the story is true-to-life with some details changed. It plays out like most underdog-sports-hero-type movies (so it has a few sappy/corny bits) but the racing scenes were done very, very well I thought. The hydroplane racing purists may have a few complaints (the Space Needle wasn't built yet in '71 when they raced in Seattle, the Miami footage wasn't taken at the Marine Stadium, and Harry Volpi was working on water-methanol injection, not nitrous oxide injection) but set that aside, and its a really good film about boat racing (of which we have almost none). In fact I asked my wife for a DVD copy for Christmas, I enjoyed it that much.

I did notice one crash scene that used RC boats. There were some computer-generated special effects of an engine blowing up that could have been more realistic, but like I told my wife, at least they didn't blow up a real Allison WWII fighter plane engine for the movie.
