The oval challenge

Can the fastest S-cat in the country hold up to running an oval?

We've talked about this a bit on other forums...some boats are fast, but are they just time bombs? Can they hold up to running in ovals?
There are plenty of boats out there that are over-powered and not setup well. They may hit a decent speed, but they only do so moments before their inevitable crash, or before they "let the smoke out".


I decided to take my 8s powered Mystic out today at lunch and brought the video camera along. The challenge: Make 6 solid oval laps with the same parts I ran at this year's SAW event. This was my attempt:

At this years NZ nats there was a similar setup, went real fast in a straight line, 12s twin motor tunnel, but by the time he had squirted down the straights , slowed and turned it just lost too much time, and was unstable through the wakes and small chop. I won the title with a 4S rigger!

This video was made in the spirit of stamina, not lap time. The idea was to show that the boat could be run in a normal manner, instead of the traditional 1-2 passes and done.
I was admittedly under-aggressive in regards to my driving in this video. I made this run during my lunch break today, and didn't have a means of recovery if I were to flip. It would be interesting to see just how fast I could turn laps with it if I took a more aggressive approach. I could definitely hold a lot more speed around the corners.

As I've commented elsewhere, this effort demonstrates excellence in creating a balanced setup that does more than simply, as Keith put it : "There are plenty of boats out there that are over-powered and not setup well. As we all grow and hone our skills, building boats that can do more than momentarily hit a max gps number on the edge of control and straining to contain the magic smoke advances our overall understanding and enjoyment as I see it.

As a former hostage of the GPS, and founder of the ZSB-WTS Club ( ZoomSplashBang-What'sThatSmell Club) I found that holding my builds to the " It ain't done 'till it can do six laps on the 1/6 mile oval" criteria I'm much happier, spend less time and money in the repair realm, and far less time in the rescue rowboat. Just my opinion of course

nice tony ...... now have u gottem to race the skiff at all lately? had 3 boats at waveblasters and had a ball....rudder arm got loose and cost me a win but i sure killed a bouy with out joining the club.....

It frustrates me to no end (and saddens me quite a bit) that I can't get anyone in my district to build/race a JS. Pat McDonald in Arizona and myself have the only ones that I know of in D19 and we did a 3-boat exhibition class in AZ in 2012 with Dick R's gas skiff done up with a brushless motor.

Without a doubt my JS is my favorite boat, and so much fun to run and/or race. I just can't seem to convince any of my crew to rig one or adequately convey how much fun they are to run/race.

My one big road trip/race each year is Winter Warmups, usually in late Feb. I've been thinking of visiting a relative in Boynton next year too. Hmmmm....
