New Spartan out of the box with lipos

Well I admit to not having seen lots of videos yet on electric R/C boats, but the Spartan looks to have real potential running the 11.1 lipos. Of course it comes with Nimh 8.4's that do a respectable job of about 35 mph, but they wont last long running hard and man do they get hot. The lipos I run here are 11.1 v 5000 mah. I have a set of 11.1 v 8.400 mah lipos on the way. The lipos get warm after a hard run but not more than that.

I just joined this forum, and hope to learn of new larger faster motors and other goodies for the Spartan. This is my first run with the lipos, and I have not changed a thing from the factory set up.

Brotha, I read your first post and started to think that maybe my set up was crap. I watched both vids and they both looked good, lol. Thanks for the reply. I haven't touch any of the trim settings so maybe Traxxas is finally getting some things right on the Spartan.

No sir the electrics dont get hot at all, the motor will be warm after a couple back to back runs. I never run over two times in a row with out pulling the drive cable cleaning and re greasing so it is a happy camper all the time un less I do too many snap shot starts in a row.

Thank you very much. I can take no credit. The boat is as it came from the factory. I even ran the batteries in the forward position. Trim tabs are un touched, no need as I see it.

You can locate the batteries forward, mid ships, or aft. Aft will get you moving much better but you need to be on smooth water and or make no steep turns or you will see how many times it can flip. Even as it is, I have done a near 90 degree turn at full speed before and it flipped at least three times, always landing up right and rocketing away.

Well, I didn't like the white so I used a sharpie on those parts. Then, I used plastidip to cover it. The plasidip can be removed.

                          A different video.

Here is a different video of the Spartan on the 11.1 5000 mah lipos. I wanted to point out that if you do a LOT of snap shot starts from a dead stop to full power in like 1/2 a second, your testing the drive cable more than it can handle. In this video you can see how it launches like a rocket but after some repeated drag race starts prompted by my co workers constant pleas, I twisted the drive cable in two and it even bent and tore up the drive tube the cable runs through.

And I'm not alone doing it apparently as Tower Hobbies where Traxxas suggested I buy from is out of the cables and the tubes. I have them on back order and will arrive in a week or two, mean while I ordered them from Traxxas directly but of course paid more. For an electric motor turning a prop in the water, it makes mountains of torque instantly and the cable is very strong but cant deal with lots of sudden starts. Better to get her moving a little then let her eat! I cant believe the cost of large lipos batteries. I paid $78.00 a piece times 2 for a set of Traxxas 11.1 v 5000 mah lipos. Traxxas uses some huge cables and connectors that I like.

Last night, I gave my self a Christmas present and bought a set of 11.1 v 8.400 mah lipos @ $125.00 each!! I paid less for the battery in my Shelby Mustang and needed two of these, $250.00 for batteries. They better launch it into orbit at the very least! I am running at work at a place called Morgans Wonderland http://www.morganswonderland.com/ Its a one of a kind park in the world for special needs kids and adults as well as everyone here in San Antonio. Im the train engineer there and as well I am starting to run my Spartan on the lake for the kids to watch. We have some remote controlled pirate ships in an enclosed area for the kids to play with, and they really get a kick out of seeing the Spartan hauling ass accross the lake. I also run my R/C electric helicopters in the Event Center for the kids and fly my R/C planes out on the soccer fields.

Not a bad thing to be paid to do the things I love to do any way. If your in or near San Antonio, come out and run with me. You all take care.

Thanks for the advice. I will keep it in mind. Does it help to ensure the cable is greased before each run?

I run Gens Ace and they're great... http://www.hobbypartz.com/98p-40c-50...se-direct.html Hobbypartz and Nitrorcx have good prices and a nice selection of lipos.

I'm thinking of getting a pair of these... http://www.hobbypartz.com/83p-4000mah-5s1p-185-30c.html

Do the Gens Ace lipos connect right up to the Traxxas connectors? On the cable, I find there is no grease left after two runs. What I mean by two runs is two sets of batteries run out. But so far I just have the two 11.1 v 5000 mah traxxas lipos, and the two stock nimh's at 8.4 each. I know you know to re program the ESC for the lipos. Back to the cable, I run my boat fairly hard but I dont by any means abuse it. I did however find the breaking point of the drive cable, by showing off. But I know now that its better to get her moving a little before you open it up hard. I know Im still going to drag race it, we'll see how it does.
