    UL-1 Unlimited Hydroplane (custom canopy)

here are some pics of my UL-1 with a custom canopy. I cut out the plastic inside the scoop to allow for air flow but this hatch slows the boat down a bit but improves handling as it holds the hull down agianst the water.

And the winner is : Lenny, Yes it is a pro boat miss lumar canopy cut down on top of a stock ul-1 hatch. This is my second hatch that I built. The first 1 I built was confiscated by a friend of mine who just had to have it. He took the hatch before I had finished it and tested it. It still had the plastic insert inside the cowl and slowed his boat down by 10mph. Thats what you get when you are an impatient person. I learned from my first hatch and built this one with the scoop a little farther back. I cut out the plastic insert and put in some mesh srceening. I added the exhaust can by cutting out the top of a Renuzit air freshener and painting it black. to finish the engine cowl I inserted a piece from an old star wars y wing fighter.\

              Both of you are genius!
This really transforms the UL-1, never liked the look that is until now!

Certainly sets it apart from the others. Love it.

I only use the newer version without the flange. The canopy with the flange has a tendency to be warped.

so a formula boats or elam straight sided canopy in 1/12 will work....did you just put it on top of the ul 1 version without modifying their air intake ?

I cut out the plastic insert inside the air scoop and epoxied in some fabric mesh screening. I cut off the two screw hold down tabs on the back of the canopy. I then sanded down the edge that would join the UL-1 along the bottom of the stock canopy. I then used some fiberglass resin to join the two canopies. Then I sanded down the excess resin and then primered and painted the hatch.
