I had a UL-1 that I did not run for 3 years, about 4 weeks ago I was asked to test an Air-Foil, well, long story short, I found that the range on that particular rx was shorter than I had remembered. During the test I encountered 3 times radio failure. The 3rd time I wasn't so lucky, I drove the hydro ( I should say the hydro drove itself to the shore line, there was damage to the hull).
A properly set up fail safe should shut down throttle to Neutral the moment the rx does not have contact/signal from the Tx. You can test that by giving low throttle input and then switch off your Tx, the motor should stop. If it doesn't, your F/S is not set up correctly.
In my case the boat was still full steam ahead w/o rudder control. Was that your case?
It was the same spot on the lake, so I was able to conclude my test w/o venturing to that spot, but I have since changed to a Spektrum Tx with a MR200 receiver.
Racers seldom use Tactic, it is what it is, a very reasonably priced system for a RTR boat. I have many of them because I started out as a RTR person and therefore acquired a number of them. I am phasing them out with Spektrum.
Change your radio and you will be happier.

Its funny after reading your reply I did not mention that when I was driving just before the time of the crash it did it for a couple of seconds didn't really think anything of it until it took off and crashed. The original receiver that came with the boat was acting up. The boat would cut out and in on fully charged batteries. Went to hobby shop and was told to try the tatic that it worked great and had a almost far as you can see range. Traxxas receiver was $50 and tatic transmitter and receiver was $79, bought the tatic. Just want to thank you for your reply. Will buy a good receiver and transmitter.Comment

You are welcome.
May I ask you why you suspected other things were at fault? How bad is the boat damaged? I ask because if the boat is not totaled, can you bench test it and see if it gives command correctly? If it does, then it is perhaps a range issue despite the fact that you thought you were well within range.
I don't think a faulty servo would make the throttle control inoperable. Were you using the main battery to power the radio via the BEC on the ESC or did you use a receiver pack? When it crashed, was the motor still running? Mine actually stopped, but it was the rudder control that was lost before it hit me and I was too slow to realize, still had my fingers pegged on the trigger, lol... ( F/S should have stopped the motor, but I don't know when it did, if it did, it was too late...)
Also I realized more than anything else, the Tactic has its 'blind" spot , at least on my pond. I got better range on my left than right. I say all this because I want to be fair and honest, they are not junk radio, but there are much better radios on the market other than Tactic.Last edited by tlandauer; 08-01-2014, 04:54 PM.Too many boats, not enough time...Comment

The hull did not get punctured just scratch on the left side with a few on top, stainless prop mangled , strut pushed up ,left turn fin also mangled The boat hit the shore on the other side of the quarry and hit on an angle left side flew up in the rhubarbs ! (lol) ran to the other side and rescued boat pulled trigger boat worked. I installed a leapord motor, seaking esc,3/16 drive cable and upgraded strut with several other up grades, I don't think it's any of the new parts just thought the fail safe was only a distance related protection. Used program card rechecked esc parameters, okay. Rebinded tatic receiver and transmitter. Do know if I should give it another crack at the quarry.Comment
