X0-1 1717 with stock Spartan ESC?

Hello, I was wondering if anyone has tried running the stock Spartan Castle VXL-6 ESC with the x01 1717 motor? Bad idea?

    Thanks,

    Pete

mmm, That 1717 may draw upwards of 200 amps depending on prop and weight of boat. Not familiar with the ESC specs.

How ya been? Still running the orange beauty?

      I'm leaning toward bad idea.

The stock ESC is burning up, lt's say "occasionally", running the stock motor.

Another consideration... I mounted a CC1717 1580kv in my Spartan just to see if it would fit with a water jacket, and my conclusion was the motor was too heavy for the component tray to support it without some type of brace for the rear of the can.

My suggestion would be an ESC upgrade and bracing if you want to run that motor.

Hi Srislash, I'm doing well, thanks! I finally have some time to run my boats again. I hope to have Miss Kirsten (AKA orange beauty) on the lake soon.

From what I understand it the VXL-6 ESC is rated 80 amps continuous, 300 burst.

Kevin, thanks for sharing your experience. I was thinking of creating a brace for the motor for sure.

I doubt it will live long in there my friend. 1717 will be using all that 80 amps. Actually I'll look up my logs from my 1717 in the morning for you and see what the continuous amps are.

I can't find any of the logs Pete. I thought I had a few on the new laptop but it(the laptop) has been messed with so much with this dang Windows 8 they may be gone.

I ran an eagle tree on my Spartan with Turnigy 180 ESC, Leopard 4082 1600kv and Prather P220 prop.
It would routinely pull 60-80 Amps average and 150+ Amps on burst. It wasn't frequent, but not uncommon, to see the Amps over range past the 180 Amps the graph maxed out at.
The 1717 is a bigger motor yet, so likely it would pull even more. (depending on prop)

Thanks for posting! I'll definitely be holding off on installing the 1717 in the Spartan until I can get a better ESC.

Does anyone have recommendations for an ESC that will play nice with my x0-1 1717?

Turnigy 180 seem like a possible option? Or should I be looking at something in the 240+ amp range? I know Castle discontinued their line of boat ESCs.. How about Swordifish?

                    Thanks!

I think the T180 would work fine, but I never ran that motor on a T180 so I can't speak from experience.

I ran T180's in two Spartans and a catamaran hull with various motor/prop combos, and overall they proved to be pretty reliable.

I see Turnigy now offers a few different 200+ Amp marine ESC options if you choose to go with a bit of extra capacity. I have no experience with any of them.

Kevin, thanks for sharing your experience with ESCs. I noticed Turnigy is releasing a new line of ESCs next month...

I didn't notice that, but there are rumblings that the Seaking 180 is discontinued. Since the T180 and SK180 are the same ESC, just different decals, it makes sense if they are being discontinued, that a new or updated line would be introduced.
