Old Hull vs New Hull - A Few Observations

Well, it's that time of the year again, time to get the boats repaired and tuned for another season.

Those who followed my thread last summer know I torched the T180 ESC in my Red Spartan toward the end of the season. I decided to change out the hull, mostly because it is impossible to get the stink out of them when you fry the electrics, and partly because the deck was starting to separate from the hull and I couldn't convince myself it was worthwhile to spend any time repairing a scorched hull.

I made a few observations while stripping down the old hull and starting to prep the new hull, and since there have been inquiries from time to time on the differences between the two hulls I thought I'd post up a few pics.

NOTE: these are observations and quick measurements so no claim they are 100% representative. There may be minor differences that are not readily apparent.

Out with Old in with the New

First I looked at the rear of the hull, I can't see any difference in the transom or vee between the two versions. I have seen claims that the hull is 0.5 inch deeper but the measurements I took don't confirm this.

The transom is 10 cm deep from the deck seam to the tip of the V on both hulls, and the center of the stuffing tube is approx. 9.3 cm from the deck seam to center of tube.

The angle of the V is 49 - 50 degrees on both hulls.

The level is off bubble a bit in the photo, but my table is off bubble by the same amount

    Transom View

There is a bit of design difference on the rear of the deck

The top of the deck has a few changes, one is the change on the rear of the deck in the photo above, another is the obvious one everyone knows about which is the flat deck at the bow instead of the taper (sheer) of the old hull. A more pronounced cowl and deck edge ridges as shown in the photo below.

The center cowl and deck edge ridges are 2-3mm higher on the new hull.

The front of the hull is where the most noticeable changes are. The bow is a bit deeper (due to the flatter deck) and the rise is steeper. This should mean the New version Spartan should cut the waves a bit more rather than than lift up on them. Assuming of course the bow is in the water, not lifted out while planing on the rear pad.

The other thing I noticed is the planing strakes are different lengths. On the old hull the outside strake is 64cm long and the inside strake is 61.5cm long. On the new hull the lengths are; outside 65cm and inside 56.5cm long.

The Planing Strakes are different lengths between the old and new hull

Continued next post (due to too many photos)

I couldn't really notice any visible difference in the flare of the bow, although it would be reasonable to assume subtle differences with the steeper bow angle. I didn't attempt any kind of measurement, and I'm not certain the photos will provide the depth needed to see anything, but visually the flare looks very similar to me.

    Bow Flare

Many Spartan owners with new hull style claim it is much more stable than the original version. The changes are subtle, but on model boat hulls a small change can sometimes make a world of difference.

I will be better able to evaluate once we are back on the water in the spring.

EDIT: One other thing I noted, the new hull is about 1cm shorter in overall length than the old style hull.
EDIT EDIT: I also notice Traxxas still can't get the decals on straight.

Where did you get the new hull from?
You helped me last year with my hobbywing 180 and tacon 3674 1700 kv install into my spartan.
Thank you for the lexan mount again...Was thinking of trying a new hull also.I still have my spartan with the tacon and hobbywing 180 in it but have a
Spare brand new castle spartan esc and motor that traxxas sent me last year all installed into the radio tray that needs a new home.
Also will the original hatch fit the new hull I have a brand new one in the package. Thanks for your help again.
      Brandon....

I also just got a new mystic that has not seen the water yet.And I like my motley crew That I got towards the end of last summer.Man I think.I got the Offshore electrics bug and I am hooked.Gonna be a good summer for boating I'm hoping.

Thanks for posting them up Kevin - they will surely help those like me to know the difference.

I still havent gotten a hull yet as Phil's hobby shop cant seem to know if what they have is updated or not. They probably didnt know that traxxas came out with an updated hull till I emailed them more than a week ago.
While there are other spartan hull sellers in ebay, none can match the int'l. shipping cost of Phil's.

I picked the hull up off e-bay for $119 plus shipping. It isn't "brand new" per se. It is a new hull from a Spartan that has been stripped down and I assume parted out. I think you will find most of the hulls on e-bay will be the same.

It is in 100% condition, as far as I can tell. The only thing that may be a problem is if any of the mounting holes stripped out when they removed the bolts. That would be where the risk is buying these of e-bay. I will know for certain over the next week or two when I start to re-assemble it.

This is the second hull I have purchased. I replaced my daughters blue Spartan hull last summer after a collision left a gaping hole in the side. It was also a "stripped down" hull off e-bay and everything was fine with it.

The original hatch fits the new hull.

I hear you on the shipping costs. Being from Canada everything I buy, whether from overseas or from the USA is international shipping and that can really add up sometimes, especially on larger items. Not to mention annoying delays coming through customs.
This hull cost me about $40 to ship, but it was the "fast ship" option and included insurance. I got it in about a week which is pretty good for international.
