Spartan Radio Tray used for another build?

If there is one thing they got right on the Spartan it is the Radio tray. The design which allows you to remove the entire assembly which includes motor, esc, servo. and receiver by loosening 2 bolts is brilliant. I am going to try to attempt to install this in another project boat using some aluminum angles cut to fit for support so basically it will install just like the Spartan. Anybody attempt this yet?

Not that I know of, but I agree, the component tray is the one feature of the Spartan I really like.

Odd enough, I was just thinking the other day, "I wonder if anyone has ever tried to adapt the tray into a better hull".

Go for it, I'm certainly interested in watching your project.

Just purchased a Princess Hull and will be using my standard T180 and Tacon 1700 which I have on the Spart although I may put in a Tacon 1300 to keep the amps a little lower. Hoping to get close to 50mph out of her when done. Will be running my standard 3S Nano tech 6000mah batterries in her. Here is the hull I just ordered. Price on the site is wrong as it actually comes to $139 when you add to cart. I've been thinking about that for a while too. I just don't have anything to put it in. A friend of mine has deep-v and said he may try it. I think it's a great idea!

This would be an awesome hull for the Tray IF it is deep enough to accommodate it. FYI, I picked up a few extra component trays on ebay. They get down pretty cheap once in a while. This will allow me to experiment a little even screw things up. Just picked up 2 trays for 13$ delivered. When you think about it, a motor mount alone cannot be had for $6.50. When the Princess arrives I will document the conversion as I do believe this is really going to take off.

In my case I will be building a complete separate unit on the component tray using upgraded parts all around in order to handle power and heat much more efficiently than the stock Traxxas stuff. This will also reduce replacement costs when things do go wrong. However, for the regular Spartan owner this can translate to simply removing the tray from their boat with everything in place and transferring it to the new hull. Depending on the hull being used, the only thing you may need to change would be the prop size. This is going to be fun, stay tuned.

Geez, I sure hope that price was wrong, $300 for a bare hull would have been outrageous.

You have a challenge ahead of you if you have to try to work through, and fit everything through that hatch.

Good luck with the project, and as I said earlier, I'll be watching with great interest.

Price was $139 when added to cart so not bad at all. I am really excited about this project, unfortunately I need to wait for the long delivery times of their hulls from HK. I can still make the aluminum tray mount brackets this week and then only need to glass them in once the boat arrives. Seriously thinking about the Pursuit hull also.

I am used to working on real boats which has been my passion for the last 17 years.
