Guys, I'm brand new to RC with the exception of model planes about 20 years ago. My wife surprised me with an early Christmas present. It is a brand new Traxxas Spartan w/ the Castle setup. I went to the local hobby store and bought an Onyx 245 and began charging the 2 NiMH batteries that come with the boat. About 30-40 minutes later, it was ready to go. I hook up the batteries, get the required tone from ESC, place the boat in the water. I get about 1 sec of flutter from the prop and boom. Nothing. It was about 10 feet offshore at this point so I ran home to get the fishing rod to get it back. After about 15 minutes, I retrieve the boat. I remove the hatch to find the battery packs are both melted. One + terminal even came detached. Am I screwed? Did I make a newb mistake or is something seriously messed up? I'm going to get some more packs today to check it out, but I don't want to just fry another pair. Any help is appreciated.

Not much can go wrong as it is just plug and play. Me thinks the esc or motor are shorted out causing a direct short at the battery. If the battery was defective it would have shown up when trying to charge them so I doubt this was the problem. If you get new packs, I would bench test the boat before hitting the water. Try plugging in the batts and see if the prop turns, also keep touching the batts to see if there is heat coming from them. Probably best to return the item to the store for warranty.
