just got this boat,stock batterys are terrible ? what mah can i go up to with nickel metal ? and what do you recomend in ways of fast and long runs with lipo ?

The mah on nimh will not affect speed, only run times. Extra cells will give more voltage and better speed. I don't run nimh, so haven't paid any attention to the maximum cell count you can run on nimh.
For maximum run times on lipo, consider purchasing a pair of 5S or 6S batteries and changing the wiring on the ESC to a parallel wiring configuration. This will double the capacity of your batteries. So if you have two 5000mah batteries, you will end up with 10,000 mah of capacity for long run times.
I recommend you buy lipos with 30C discharge rate minimum.
