Fastech turning tricks?

Well, Dad came out a couple of weeks ago and we raced my scratch built cat with his Fastech. Pretty sweet boat! We had it out in probably 4-5" chop and it handled great. We ended up putting an X445 prop on it and using 4500 NIMHs. Pretty good speed - estimating upper 20s. So then I had to try, since people are saying they can and haven't blown anything yet, we put in 6S1P and I think we got 50% better speeds.

So, question to all: has anybody else had issues with getting it to turn good both directions? We adjusted the servo and rudder linkages to max throw and we can get it either good right or left, but not both. We were thinking adding another rudder? Anybody solve this problem yet?

They are set up to turn to the right.(offset rudder) If you add another rudder, you will solve the problem.

I have same motor/esc but X645 prop on my cat (same length and weight) and on 6S for maybe a minute total, on one water intake (same cooling water from motor to esc and out) temps were still only 125deg on both. I understand you don't even need to add receiver pack, although it has been recommended. Since it is a pretty inexpensive ESC I will keep it on 5-6S without rx pack.

Yep, that is a killer motor/esc combo. Try big props!

Turning Help

I assume you have the steering rate adjusted to maximum?

As for rudder and servo linkage: Try Servo on furthest hole and rudder on original hole or hole closest to rudder. This will maximize your turn rate. I did this on my friends Formula and it helped a ton.

I made the linkage adjustments after the first run. It helps but steering still isn't that great.

I did too, but I could only get it to turn good one way; and yes the throw is maximized. Tempted to try two rudders.

One comment on 6S, I just toasted that controller in my Titan 29 (used same motor and controller). I was spinning an X645 prop and after about a minute of screaming around the pond, I got the magic smoke. So, it might be a good idea to prop down or beef up the ESC. Here is vid:

Yeah man send the link up it will be of info for most of us who are wanting the 6s setup.... im torn between running 5s or 6s and am not wanting to sink any more money into this boat right now so esc and motor upgrade is out of the question.

Recall the above discussion is for the Titan 29. For the Fastech, being smaller, narrower and a mod V hull (less drag), it might be ok on 5S with the X445; but much better to prop up to that size and check temps religiously. If all cool, try 6S. Looking back at that video, we probably ran for 1-2 minutes... The Titan burned after about 60 seconds, so might be ok.

I think your right, the x645 is too much prop for that size boat and the proboat motor. In theory if the proboat motor could spin the x645 to the motors full potential, the boat would have run over 60mph.
