newbee looking for best bang for $

Just got MG from the local RC shop this week. This is the first boat I have had in years. Running it on NicD sucks. My Proboat Programming Module comes today. I looking forward to running my 2 2s 5000 lipo packs, I had them sitting around from my Traxxas slash. I would like to do some simple bolt on type up grades to this boat. Any advice would really help. I have read several threads and here is what I was thinking of doing:
    - Octura Offset Bracket
    - OSE upgraded flex cable
    - x642 prop
    - cooling system plumbing upgrades. ( bigger 1/4 hose, Y pipe to ESC and motor, then Y pipe back to exit)
-fiberglass the canopy and add flotation. ( for now just extra tape)
    - ESC??? do i need to upgrade yet?
    - what is the max battery size I can run on the stock 45amp ESC
    - What is the max battery size the motor can run? With or with out the stock ESC?
    - Battery upgrades for the stock system and beyond?
    I want to FAST

Some people have had a lot of luck running on 5s as far as upgrades the offset rudder is nice I wouldn't recomemd a y pipe not sure why you ould want to do that the less restriction to flow the better. X642 is a great all around prop I also like m445 but that might be a little much for stock setup. You can make your boat hit mid to high 40's with stock setup but to be safe id change your esc to atleast 180a but you don't have to right away just don't go crazy with to many cells. Then there always a motor change. My first motor in my mg was a 4074 2200kv leopard and I was getting high 40's with an x642 on 4s

Thanks. I saw a thread on better cooling by using a Y pipe, so the motor and ESC both get fresh cold water. But better flow also makes sense. What do you mean 5s. is that 2 5s packs? I dont have the lingo yet. Is the stock set up safe for 2 6400 3s lipo? I have a some I want to try. thanks for the ESC advice. Everyone seems to be in that 180a+.

5s would be a 2s pack and a 3s pack but make sure they are the same c rating and mah. So if you have a 2s 40c 5000mah you would want a 3s 40c 5000mah on the other side. If your worried about cooling just add an extra pickup. I run an extra pickup and that cools half my esc and waterjacket and the rudder pickup cools the other half of my esc and my motor mount so if 1 gets clogged or I lose a line I always have something cooling both motor and esc I've found it to work very well I also upgraded to 4mm cooling lines and a bigger exit hole

Also if you run anything over 4s you ned to diconect the bec which is the red wire on your esc and you'll have to run an external battery pack like a reciever pack

              Welcome to OSE.

We try to stay away from "Y" adaptors in boating. Not worth it IMHO. I use 1 pickup on most all of my boats without any issues. With the 2x 2s packs you have and the x642 you will see a very nice speed increase over the nicd you are running. No you can't use the 2x 3s lipos on this boat, the esc won't take it. There are some steps needed to run 5s on the stock system more then just disableing the bec. I have done it succesfully without any issues, but others have blown there esc trying to do it. I would take it one step at a time and get use to 4s first. Everyone wants more speed these days, but not everyone goes about the right way of doing it. Bigger motors and more voltage are NEVER a subsititute for proper setup. With the right setup the sky is the limit. People are trying to shortcut and bypass the setup step and it's not going well for them. If you REALLY want a well running boat, take your time and do it right (which is not the anwer most people are looking for).JMHO.

The seaking 180s are amazing esc's and so are the swordfish 200's. I have been using them more then anything lately and I do like them. So far my favorite motor to date is a Leopard 4074 1774kv motor. I broke into the 50s on 4s with that motor in a cat similar size to this, I have since scaled back the setup to high 40mph, I am happy and boat is happy. I have the leopard 4074 2200kv in a 32" mono running low 50mph, in the MG WITH THE PROPER SETUP 50+ should not be an issue with the 4074 2200kv motor, i would run it on 4s2p. I have a 4074 2200kv motor for sale in the SS right now. Brand new.

Thanks for the input. Any threads to look at for good set up would really help. Ran it tonight on 2 2s lipo in stock form...fun...had a bit of a head wind and did a back flip...woops... moved the battery's forward, 9 inches from the stern worked good. Can't wait to make a few more mods.

Seeing as we are talking setup as the first step in maxing speed. I’m running with stock motor & esc, 2s 4000mah 25c lipos, M445 prop on stock rudder layout. Speeds are around 39 mph with best at 39.3 mph. Should I be able to break into the 40’s with just setup?

I'm not sure what I'm doing right since my batteries are at the back of the trays and I've run 5 or 6 strong motors in mine wth a best of 63.4 and haven't flipped yet.

That's not bad on 4s but yes you should be able to. Darin hit like 49mph with stock setup and a lot ofdifferent adjustments I'm sure plus he trued the hull so it is possible just depends on how much time you spend adjusting plus water conditions apply too. I've had days where ill start out around 50 make a few adjustments and gain an extra 10mph consistantly

I've been having problems accelerating... when I hit it hard out of the hole the thing takes off like a bat... and flips. When I accelerate slowly, as soon as its on plane and cruising... it wants to flip lol. I mean again, I have had only 2 runs to play around with it and those were cut short due to the flips, so I haven't had the time. Whats your position of the strut? Up or down?

A good place to start is bout 9 inches from tansom then gradually move them back. Where is your strut set? Try putting it on the table so that the rudder just hangs off and set your strut flat with your hull then after a few passes if its plowing you can pitch your strut up a little that helped me out alot

There's so many adjustments but once you get it the way you want it they run very well. I never even ran the stock motor I ripped it out the day I got it but that might also have helped me because of the weight of the motors are so much bigger than the stock one
