    Dx3r?

I heard that spektrum radios dont really work with boats....but I'm hearing mixed reviews...Is it ok to use my DX3R or just use the stock radio with my BJ 26?

You better slap the person you heard it from upside the head. There is a whole bunch of discussion on the subject. Use the search function

Mixed reviews goes for everything... get used to it.
Use it and take your own conclusion, just be sure to use a
      6 volts Rx pack.

        Jan,

Do you find you need to run an Rx pack for all applications?

I ask because I took my new DX3R setup out to the lake last week and did a range check, and got well over 1000ft out without even a glitch... Ran around on the other side of the lake for a few, then drove on back... Range verified on GPS and Google Earth...

I was running my P-Spec OPC, 4S1P, SV27 Motor and ESC, NO Rx pack... Didn't glitch at all...

Darin, the single antenna receivers are sensitive to receiver voltage. They will run on 4.8 volts but not less, that is why a 6 volt pack is a good idea as a cushion if the pack gets just a little low. If the BEC supplies plenty of power then no problem, but if the drive packs get low the BEC output may get low too. Your test does not demonstrate any low voltage scenario so it means little. Test the stock receiver with low drive packs and see how it does. Even then, your BEC may be powerful enough but others may not be.

I'm not really interested in how my radio performs in a case where I've run the packs down below their recommended minimum... If you've run a boat that long, you may have bigger issues that radio reception... especially if you've run it that far out of range... I've been running BEC on all my BL boats for 4-years and have yet to have an issue with Rx voltage under any conditions... but then I never run my boats much longer than the time it takes to complete a race.

Guess I need to keep the sport boater in mind more when I respond to these questions... as I've never run a boat into a "low voltage scenario" before, so I don't have much experience with that... I just assumed that people would stay within the recommended parameters. My Bad... Sounds like a 6V Rx pack is the safe way to go then...

From personal experience I've never had an issue. I don't race, I just screw around a pond with my brother in law. Last season I ran on NIMH packs, and always ran them right til the low voltage (set to low) would kick in. I've never had a problem with glitching or anything. The antenna is not sticking out either. I have it tucked in my hull, along the transom (tupperware box removed).

I have the DX3.0, NOT the DX3R, so not sure how that affects anything.

I don't use Rx packs on all my applications. Surprisingly enough I run it in a mandatory fashion only with my 2.4 radios... go figure. My Spektrum (the one I told you about), would not even synch to the receiver if I did not hook a 5cell pack to it. I am yet to do a range chk since I got so frustrated with my 2.4 systems that now every time I get to the pond, I just wanna drive and drive... Once I get that out of my system, I'll do a range chk and see what's going on. My FM Airtronics MX-3 is my trusted Tx/Rx system. Has yet to annoy me.
1000 ft? I hate to say that but I am almost positive that none of my 2.4 radios will go that far... and you don't even have antennas sticking out do ya?

Yes... the antenna is sticking out...

I should have some more info in a few weeks... I am outfitting all my raceboats with SR3100 Rxs right now, and we have our first Practice race on March 14th... Should have more info on performance by then...

Well i have the DX3S and using the 3100 RX and a dry run last night i left the boat in a friends house and managed to walk 100m up the road and still had control.

However my friends father has had problems with his spektrum equipment in a gas HPI Baja and gets less than 20m range... i here a few people moaning when running spektrum in gas powered models???

He probably has the antenna positioned poorly. He needs to move it to the top of the buggy, which may mean it's not where it was originally positioned.

Depending on what rx he's using, he may be able to get by by putting the last inch or so of the antenna up so it has 360 degree visibility. That would be if he used one where the last inch physically looks different. If he has one with a 1" antenna or a 4" antenna, then he has to move the rx physically to the top of the vehicle.

Run with the DX3S this weekend and report NO issues. I do however have the antenna just pocking up through the topdeck on a VERY short antenna tube maybe 2" long.

After 25 years of running Futaba am/fm equipment I made the switch to the Spektrum radio and haven't looked back. I've converted all my boats and this summer will be converting my kids boats. The radio have been nothing but great for me.

By the way this isnt a knock on Futaba, I probably would have used their system if the price was in a similar range, but it wasn't at the time.

Been running a DX3 on about 8 different boats for 3 years now with no issues.

I always use an external antenna.
