I just wante to know what was a good gps for putting in the boat to get the top speed?

I use a garmin foretrek 301

Garmin 101s can be found used on eBay for under $70. The more expensive models are nice but they do nothing more that you need, which is just a MAX SPEED reading.

Very small and easy to use. Of course you have to have a laptop for checking out the speeds etc.
