    up in smoke!!!

Spent the evening stripping down my new to me supervee 27 and cleaning the smoke out of the radio box. Also noticed that the end cap had worked off the rear of the motor which probably explains why the motor would only twitch before amoking the ESC.

Bought the boat because I had read so many great reports about it and because of a less than satisfactory first experience with Proboat. Great looking boat, impressive first few runs. . . but after only four runs it appears that the motor and ESC are toast.

So, if I'm gonna keep this thing I'll be needing some replacement components.

PS it is difficult to determine the extent of damage sustained by the ESC. I do know that the capacitor is fried.

So this is the first time you have stripped it down to do maintenance in four runs?

Would this be a WTB thread since it has been moved? Consider the motor/esc fried and of no value right now. You might want to seek a UL1 power system or a similar to make that hull a performer.

        Jim,

Nope, I've greased the flex shaft as recommended, sealed all of the hardware where it attaches to the hull and confirmed good waterflow through the cooling jackets on motor and ESC.

          John,

I had placed this in a WTB thread originally and it got moved over here. I'm not looking to break any speed records. I love the boat and found it plenty fast enough the way it was. I own a 26 foot express cruiser and enjoy running the RC from my swim platform.

We can get you in the right direction. RC'n off the swim platform? Way cool. What do you need?

John, yep. . . way cool. The only bummer was having to use the humble Proboat mini-v as a rescue boat to recover the way cool, but dead in the water sv27. . .

I'n not sure what I need. I am an industrial electrician by trade so I deal with 575 volt three phase motors every day. The end bell had come loose on the sv motor and I pulled it apart. Looks like the rotor had touched the start in a couple of places but I have continuity through all the windings and no short to ground on any of them.

The capacitor is gone from the ESC and I am not afraid to open it up and replace components if neccessary. Bottom line is I want to get this thing operational agin on a budget. And that might be part of the problem since I bought it previously owned. Had lots of upgrades and it looked in excellent shape when it arrived.

Since you are an electrical savy guy here are the basics. To verify the condition of the motor, the end bell came off and the rotor made contact with the stator, you would need to do a megger of the windings to each phase and to case. I wouldnt drop below a 70 volt setting, 100 volts would be safer. Even with a no leakage reading I would be hesitant. The motor might have gotten hot enough to demagnatize the rotor before being pushed out and you might find more problems with it. Small amp capacity speedos (ESC) are cheap. A smoked cap on the speedo is enough reason to doubt it. Get another. You can see if its repairable at a later date. Dont gamble the parts. Get another motor and speedo.

What we need are the details of what you have. What batteries you want to run, the prop. All that helps us help you. If you want to stick right around stock speeds its easy to spec out the aftermarket/ cheaper stuff to get. But if the need for speed grabs you then the variables come to roost.

                  Thanks, John

Figured I would take the motor to work today and put it on the megger but, as you suggest, I am not expecting great things.

The boat was set up with the following:
                  Batteries --- 2s lipos 5400 mah
                  Prop: and a grimracer 40x52 3 blade .
                  Individually cooled motor and ESC:
                  Port turn fin
                  Through hull pick ups.

As for the need for speed. . . it is there but I don't want to break the bank doing it.

Steven, I don't know how old it is. I bought it from someone who owned it for a little while. He said he only ran it a couple of times before his neighbours came over for a little chat. The boat is louder than his miniv's and c's. Lived in a retirement community and said the boat was too loud for their pond. It also sounds like he did all of the modifications.

Ok, so its not covered by the warranty. I would suggest the sv27R motor and a ul1 lipo ready esc.

Thanks for the advice, Steven. I'll certainly take it into consideration. Living in Canada I am wary of shipping charges, delays and duties that get tagged on to the price of goods. I've found the extra charges prohibitive more often than not.

PS. . . don't know how OSE is associated with Aquacraft but a closer inspection of the motor showed just a skiff of some kind of epoxy along a quaretr of the entire diameter. Someone mentioned that Aquacraft experienced issues with the bell end coming off the motor and if that it how they were manufactured I understand why the issue.
