NiCd battery question in my new boat

I'm having a weird problem with the NiCad i've bought so far with my SV.

The first two packs I bought were Venom 3000Mah and I've never been able to get any longer than about 5 minutes of runtime with about 1/2 power.

So... I tried some Onyx 3000Mah batteries charged on my buddies charger and I finally got a chance to see how fast the SV should be. It ran great on those and lasted probably 7-8 minutes running around at full throttle.

To me, that pointed to an issue with my charger or the Venom packs.
    - I ruled out the charger, I thought, because I charged my Venoms and they still underperformed - this led me to believe it's the packs themselves.

Next, I bought a cheap set of 1800Mah Onyx batteries and they did well and the boat performed much faster on these, but still terrible run time of <5min.

Now, I'm just wondering if NiCad batteries have to be charged several times before they reach full potential or, I have a bad charger - It's an electronic Duratrax charger.

Long story, but basically, I'm wondering if there is some problem with my Stock speed controller that is unnecessarily draining batteries. It's all going to be a mute point once I get my LiPo's, but it does have me concerned.

No 5-7 minutes is a average run time. I use 4000-5000mah lipo packs and I only run for 5-7 minutes depending on the way im driving

      NiCAD, You mean NiMH ?

The boats require a lot of amps, more than low qaulity NiMH packs can provide most times.
All your probs are the batterys, Get some 5000mah NiMH packs or better yet LIPOS

Remember that nickel cadium batteries have a "memory" and if you dont fully cycle them, they will lose that memory and never reach peak charge again. Thats why no one uses them anymore, and why they are soo cheap. Get a higher capacity nimh battery. Or if you really want to see the potential of your boat, invest in some lithium polimer packs!!

The Onyx 1800 are NiCad and the Venom are NiMH. The Venom packs must be bad because the NiCads run much better.

I also have LiPo's on the way from Hobby King - 5000 Mah 20C Turnigy packs : ) I just bought the NiCad packs since the Venoms are trash and I need something to run with until they arrive

Ordered my Grim Racer 42x55 and some Hatch Tape! Hopefully next week my LiPo's will arrive - can't wait!

Removing the battery trays this weekend and going to drill out the water pickup. I added xtra large cooling tubes last night.

                This is a great hobby!!!!
