    SV27 Questions?

I am new here and know nothing about boats. I do run offroad cars and love bashing them up.
My stepdaughter has asked for my advice on getting her boyfriend a 30mph boat. She has asked to try to keep the price at about $100 to $200. Thru my searching I think i have it narrowed down to the SV27, a bit over her pricing but managable.

I have some older equipment I can give him to get going (at least to see if he is into it).
So my questions are about batteries.
I have some older GP3300 7 cell configured for an older 4X4 kinda like this:

    Will they even fit?
Will he have to run a bec with it due to higher voltage?

This will be his first RC and he is a quick learner. Iam sure if he gets into it he will be going Lipo. But for now can he run my old stuff?

I have read a few things here in last couple of days and already have learned alot.
    Thanks in advance,

Hello Gary and welcome to the forum. You could run those packs. I would recommend getting a BEC or a receiver pack as there may be radio glitches without it. Depending on if you buy the boat new or used, there may be some additional work needed to make the boat reliable. There is alot of great info. on these modifications here on this forum.

Hi, I run 7 cell 8.4 volt NIMH in my SV27 without a bec, but I may soon switch to one later down the road. As for now I have had no issues with boat in this config. I would recommend removing the fwd part of the battery box and sliding the batteries fwd so that the are flush or level with the fwd part of the motor mount. This will help ALOT with handling. As for your batteries i suppose the 3300 in GP3300 means 3300mah, your not going to get much run time with those batteries you need atleast 4200mah or above. It is a tight fit with the hump packs but you can make it work you just have to slide the battery in fwd of the motor then back into position. Hopefully this helps. I would also recommend switching the prop. You can order the perfect replacement on this site for around $5, why limit yourself to the 30mph range, with this boat and the right config you can hit 40s

        Thanks guys, pretty quick responses.
I am sure if my stepdaughters boyfriend likes this thing, he will want to upgrade things. She is wanting to get it for him for a christmas present.
I will throw in my old batteries and a charger to get him started. "GP3300", yes the 3300 is the Mah. I also have one set of 4400mah i will give him. I might lend him a set of my 25c5000mah lipos for 5 minutes, lol. That should get him hooked for sure.
Anyway looking thru this forum Iam getting excited and hope I can be there when he gets to run it the first time out. (I cannot get into boats as I have WAY too many cars)
I am also thinking maybe a Christmas card with a new prop in it might work..hehe
You guys are awsome, Love the forum, keep up the good work.

kinda off topic but what is your guys opinion about surface drive and steerable drive?

I personnally am not a big fan of the steerable drive systems. My friend has a Proboat Apache 24 and the steerable drive system in my opionon sucks. The metal u-joint is starting to kinda rust and their is no way I found to stop it. I clean it with alchol after runs since it helps evaporate moisture and I also applied a rust proof spray that helped a lot. Just a pain in my opinion.

I just got a supervee about a month ago. Being a car guy myself I am now hooked and trying to sell off some of my stuff. I would highly recomend lipos for this boat or keep runs a couple minutes at a time. It really heats up NiMh packs especially if their stick packs. A 40-42 carbon 2 blade is perfectfor the stock setup. With better batteries and connector 45's are doable. Before I forget get a new water jacket for the motor, the stock ones tend to leak other than that and sealing it up good it's a great boat.

Basically I am just now waiting for the stepdaughter to give me permission to pull the trigger, hehe.

When you say different connectors, you mean something different than the deans? I always thought deans were a pretty good connectors. I run traxxas trucks and have all my connectors set up with the HV traxxas stuff currently.
Whatever I give him to keep will be setup with whatever connectors you guys tell me is best.
I drug out my old NiMH and put them on a charge. Out of 5 sets only two of them seem to be in ok shape, unfortunately those sets are both stick packs.
I also double checked my Lipo's and they are 30c 5000mah 2s hard case flightmax's from hobbycity. I think I will have to loan them to him for first runs.

The props you suggest are 40-42 carbon type? Does this mean 40mm or 42mm?
I think I read the boat is 3/16th shaft and the prop rotates counterclockwise?

Sorry for the Noob questions but Id like to be sure I get the right stuff for his RC Christmas to be "totally awsome".

I also want to know what type of LVC to get.
I have two Novaks but they are only 2 cell and I assume I would need a 4 cell.
And of course I am wondering how to wire the LVC into the circuitry?
Is it safe to assume the wires coming out of the sealed box are prewired for a series hookup? Then just wire one lead to red on one battery connector and the other lead to black on the other battery connector and all is good?
I have tried to look for some pics on the actual wiring of the boat but having a rough time.
I can do all the soldering and mods neccessary, but I want it to be easy for him his first time in case I cannot be there.
I can get the boat and have it modded and ready for him to open on christmas and hopefully he could plug in the batts and go with no worries. His first runs on stock prop, then as he wishes he can install the faster props as he gets the hang of it.

Long post lotsa questions, thanks for your patience and advice.
I think Im getting into this a bit much. With a lake less than a mile away from me I am straining to refrain from getting one myself.... Eek Gads!

                Thanks again,

Yes your correct on everything about the prop, I cant help you with the lipo lvc though. Heres the prop I run and it get the boat on plane very very quickly. Your going to loss a little top end speed since it a 2 blade but it will give be a little easier on your nimh batts. I like it alot better than than the stock prop. The cavatates why to much with stock prop and take a while to get on plane. Since hes new to boating his going to be letting of the throttle alot till he gets the hang of it and this will give better run time.

Yes carbon props in 40mm or 42mm would be best for all around fun. I am a car guy myself and thought of deans as good stuff until I started running boats. They draw a lot more amps than a car or truck. When I bought my Lipos from hobbycity they came with some deans knock offs. One run in and they were melted together. I the. Switched the over to the real stuff but they also get pretty hot with any prop 45mm or bigger. This boat is an absolute blast once the little stuff like sealing and tuning is done. The Novak LVC will work if you get the 4 cell one. I would recomend the dimension engineering on though as it will do 2-12s lipos with one smaller unit. I had a Novak one go bad but they replaced it. Both of em get hooked up the same. You are correct One wire to positive and one to negative but not on the jumper. Good luck!

Thanks again guys, all of this makes sense to me and I understand.
I cant wait to get to watch this guys face when he runs it...
My stepdaughter saw a video of it and she say's it "Rocks".
So it sounds like the best deal around right now and I'll keep you guys posted how things go.

Make sure to tub test it before running. You should really remove hardware and reseal it all. I have three of these and they are a blast.

One thing I might add that you should do before you even run this boat is to grease the drive cable very well with some good grease ( i use grimracer grease). remove the drive cable 12mm & 10mm wrench and pull cable out apply grease install cable wipe excess then remove cable again apply more grease remove excess then tighten back up (leave about 1/8 gap between dognut and stuffing tube. I found by taking the time and doing this helps a whole lot and helps with water being sucked through the stuffing tube (which seems to me where most of the leaking occurs, that and the factory water jacket.)

Great tips and descriptions. I have read about the tub test and greasing up the stuffing tube. Wasn't sure how to do the greasing but was hoping it would be described in the directions/owners manual. But now I have it from you guys.
                            Thanks again.

Here is the SV27 in some pretty rough water. I used a 3s2p to slow it down a little and ran a M445 prop.

This is my Aquacraft SuperVee 27 jumping some wave at Bayfront.
