Poly. You can fix it with epoxy though and it will be stronger. I get inside and lay some FG with epoxy and then just use bondo on the outside...or squadron puddy.

You should try and sand the inside if you can reach it. If not use a flat stick and put some rough paper on it and reach in and sand around the area. Then clean it with acetone.

      Vincent,

The boat is made of Vinylester.. kind of the same as poly but better water resistance.

As Jeff mentioned you can possibly fix it with Epoxy but…

Some epoxies do not go over poly well, but most polys can go over epoxies that is if they are finishing epoxies… O boy.. this is not getting any easer is it!

If you are going to use epoxy make sure you use west systems or Systems 3..

Fast cure epoxies should be avoided.

      Keep us posted.

        Hello jeff and michael,

thanks for the advice. I'll check on a little part to see if the grip is good.

I think i will use polyester.

Michael your boats are a lot of fun, you did a great job at a fair price !

I am working on a sv 27 hull now that the kid driving it ran into a real boat then bounced off of a dock. No real damage, a split on the bow starboard side about 2" long and some good scratches on the same side. Since I could not easly get into the hull and plan on stripping it down and painting it, I am making the repair from the outside. ground down the area about 1/2" wide laid in 2 layers of medium cloth and poly resin now Im letting it cure for a couple of days after the initial sanding. I have done this on other hulls and have had great results

Just reinforced my hillsides with fiberglass coatings 2 part epoxy. I chose a medium strength epoxy to alow the boat to flex a little. Well see in a day or so how it sets but so far so good. Someone else also told me that when working with epoxy resin you need to first wash your surface with soap and water then start your normal prep. I was told that epoxy leaves a sheen that will not allow other resins to bond. Let me know if anyone else has heard that.

It leaves a waxy surface. Clean it out GOOD (citrus cleaners work well), and rinse and dry thoroughly. A little sanding doesn't hurt either.

Not all epoxy resins are wax based. They still need to be scuffed before next coat though.
