    Tape the Hatch

Ive spent a small fortune on all the upgrades and lipos etc. Yeasterday, I ran the new 2 11.1 V lipos, seacraft90esc and 8XL ferago with a CF48 prop. Idled it out about 20 feet from shore and squeesed the trigger just a little bit. The boat didnt go. I thought Id lost a prop.

Out came the fishing rod with float and retreived the sv27. The collect had let go of the flexshaft and the shaft was half out of the boat. Lucky it didnt go to davey jones locker.

After tightening it up, time for trial 2. This thing is to quick. I dont have a GPS but the grin on my kids faces dosent need one. Just keeping it on the water is fun. Never got to half throttle and its far quicker than on 7 cells nimh.

After about 2 minutes it stopped about 50 from from the shore. Here we go again.

This time the retreval took about 25 minutes as baitcashing reel had a overrun with the boys playing with it.

Pulled it in and the whole flexshaft had gone, along with a brand new CF48 prop and tapered prop nut. The resulting hole was letting water in but not to the extent I expected.

The boat was pressureised because I always tape the hatch with Magic Tape. consequently only about 2 cups of water found its way in before the cabin pressure stopped any more. Not enough to flood the new lipos (over the heatshrink) or flood the motor. Lucky, as this hoby is expensive in Australia. Not having the tape would mean the the boat would have to be recovered from fully sunk/ filled

Anyway just thought Id share the experience of taping the hatch thoroughly.

I have a spare shaft but am dubious about the Kinteic racing Collet after letting go twice. It did have a bit of greese in it as a result of pushing the flex shaft through the second time although I tightened it with spanners. My only thought is that it wasnt in the collet enough as I had moved the dog drive slightly to allow for the larger prop on the shaft and allowing a 5mm gap between the strut and dog drive. Maybe this is the cause of it letting go as the shaft has to go along way through for the teeth to grip.

Ill give it another go and see how it holds.
    Cheers

I hate that you lost your shaft and prop It is true.....it seems the only sure fire way to keep the water totally out is tape the hatch up. Usually with my sport running I don't use tape.....but I have A LOT of sealant on my hatch lip. Still doesn't keep all the water out. I do know that it will stay on top, and upside down for at least 2 hours.....

"Lucky it didnt go to davey jones locker." By that statement we presume you fear it sinking. What will help is tp add flotation inside the boat. There are different options. Swimming pool noodle cut to shape, or solid packing foam, etc.

Geoffrey do yourself a favour and get a pool noodle from K-Mart or any store that sells swimming pool items. The cost is about $6 and it will keep your boat floating for a long, long, long time.

I have the sandard foam flotation in the bow, its the shaft and prop that went to the bottom.

I plan never to sink the boat to extent that the electrics get wet, hence the Kinetic racing hatch lock, the foam around the hatch groove and tape over top of the hatch. Its the preasureisation that stopped the boat from filling fully.

I'll take some pics and mabe some video asap
          Happy boating

If your collet is letting go then your flex shaft is not long enough.
The flex needs to extend the whole way through the brass insert.
Move your drive dog back as far as possible and if thats not enough regrind the flat on the shaft.
Stock shafts vary in length so make sure you have full engament in the insert.

the replacement fits better, although not quite all the way to the end of the brass insert, about 3 mill from the end.

I will move the dog back a bit to make it fit all the way . Unfortunately the CF48 wont fit then, look like Ill have to use the balancer after all.

                Happy boating

8xl on 48mm and 6s has a theoretical top speed of 75mph. If you are not achieving that speed the inefficiency is resulting in a ton of heat. Either the esc or motor will die rather quickly.
I would scale back to 4s.

After further analysis and speaking with Kinetic, the collect was found to be too far onto the motor shaft (even with spacers and thrust bearings). this didnt allow the flex shaft to go through the the brass insert all the way and when the collect was being tightened the brass insert butted up against the motor shaft giving the indication that i was tight when it wasnt actually closing the teeth around the flex.

alls good now, boat is a rocket with a new motor, speede is a etti 150hv

                          Cheers
