UL-1 'Muffler Pipe' Hollow?

Has anyone cut the muffler pipes on the UL-1 canopy? And/or put lights on their UL-1?

I am considering installing 3mm red...maybe yellow...LEDs in the pipes, powered by a water-proofed button cell (3V) glued to the outside of the canopy. I plan to try to drill out the pipes, and run a lead out the back, and am curious what to expect.
