    Favorite UL-1 motor cooling jacket

I need to buy some cooling jackets for two UL-1 motors. I normally use the OSE jackets, but I thought that I would see what others are using these days? I really like the looks of the Kintec UL-1 coolers, but they haven't been in stock for a while. What are you using?

These AQ cooling jackets (from the Motley Crew) are dirt cheap and they fit the somewhat tight clearance in the UL-1 just fine.

They are actually a really, really good deal for what you get...they are a bit tight going onto the motor and bit tricky to install sometimes though.

The OSE jackets are out of stock... hence the question.

I was wondering about the new AQ jackets. Is there a secret to getting them on without tearing the orings? Are people having good luck with them?

I'll admit, it does take some patience. The one thing I've found is that if you smear a little rubber safe lubricant (like silicone grease or even dish soap) on the o-ring before you (gently) slide the jacket over the motor (with a slight twisting motion) you can generally get it on the first or second try.

Once the first end (and o-ring) of the water jacket is over the motor, look down inside the water jacket before sliding it further to make sure it's still "in the groove" then slide it down and (again) carefully slide the second o-ring over the end of the motor.

One last thing, I always make sure to start from the shaft end of the motor where there are no screws. if you start from the wire end, you may damage the o-rings sliding them over the screws holding the end bell on.

WD-40 works well too and it evaporates leaving a very thin film of oil...makes a good seal on the o-rings.

I bought one because of the multiple inlet/outlet choices and the comparitively reasonable price. And I'll say, modesty aside, that I'm pretty good getting all kinds of jackets on. The new AQ baffled me and after @ 45 minutes and a few torn o-rings I gave up. My guess is that the internal grooves (at least on mine) were too shallow -mass production tolerances & all. If I had overnight to do it, I'd would've used the technique we use to put valve seats in motorcycle heads : put the motor (in this case the spec motor) in the freezer overnight; take out after immmersing the jacket in boiling water for a tad, then have a go at it.

What about this one? I haven't tried it but it says it will fit the UL-1.

That looks like the one that comes with the new AQ Motley Crew that Tony mentioned above.

I have on occasion put a bead of silicone around the joints of leaky jackets. To do it neatly, use masking tape & peel before it cures. I have one such jacket that began leaking at a race; sloppeed silicone on & it's still holding a year later. Looks crappy but it works.

I definitely believe that the new AQ jacket ran some with insufficient groove depth. Fits nicely in my junk draw, tho'.
