so now that winter is upon us in ma, ive decided to start working on my ul-1 first. im going to replace all the hardware but i dont want to have to do too much modification, so any input will help. im thinking speedmaster will be close. since ive been waiting soo long for kintec to restock the stright turn fins, i bought some .90 aluminum and made my own. hoping this helps but not sure how turning will be affected… also as mentioned before im gonna run 2 4s packs up front.IMG_1168.jpgIMG_1167.jpgIMG_1161.jpg

I have been out of this for some years so I was wondering what is the best lipos to run with the stock setup?Comment

The UL-1's speed is not limited by the power plant. The hull has been run over 60 mph with the stock motor and ESC. This was done with prop and hull modifications. Start by adding an air dam to help keep the boat on the water and a 42 x 55 Grim Racer prop. Then start playing with prop modifications.

Two 4S packs in parallel works well. A club member just won second place in PLSH with a pair of new 4S/3300mAh 45C Turnigy packs in the front. The boat ran great with this amount of weight.
Listen to Loring. The stock boat is speed limited by hull design, not power. Experimenting with props can result in meaningful speed gains with stock power. I was there when Brian ran the prototype to 65 mph at the LA SAWs, but that was problematic. The boat required skill to drive and would not be a good candidate for a fun sport boat. You'd spend too much time in the retrieval boat, or replacing speed controls. If you want to go 60 mph with a sport hydro hull, get a hull designed for those speeds like a Whip or FE-30 and a 1515/1Y motor. On 4S these can run over a mile in semi-rough water with reliability and fun....more fun than a hopped-up UL-1. Your choice - you can spend your time polishing a turd*, or spend you time going fast with a lot more enjoyment on the water.
*The UL-1 is not a "turd" in the sense that it is a bad boat. Not at all, it is a great 40-50 mph hydro but a poor 60+ mph hydro.

i understand this isnt exactly the right hull to shoot for 60. maybe thats stretching it, im thinking 55 and somewhat stable is a better goal. i already have another full build for the winter so i dont what to get into 2 full builds. just wanna make this one a bit faster. i got into a debate recently with another forum member who was claiming speeds on stock setup 4s of 65 mph. i told him its not possible, but i guess im wrong here…."shrug" anyhow, my plan is to put a leopard 2200kv in there and seaking 120. i know i want to at least replace the rudder because the stock one is pretty much toast. and replace turn fin bracket. i suppose i can always leanthen holes if need be. i live in an area where we get alot of nice conditions for running, unlike the south shore of the state, where you can find a pond to run a hydro…. maybe if its a clunker i could just swap the hull later, but since i have this one, i wanna play.Comment

No I haven't tried the 1390kv in the UL-1 yet but I'm sure you are reading my new post,
62mph gets your heart pumping for sure,
I did'ent bother taking pics of the gps because of the last guy that claimed he hit 62-65 on stock setup with 4s. yea right.
next time I do this I'll do the best I can to get a cop friend of mine with a radar gun and a video to show undisputable proof.
currently I'm running the 1390kv in my impulse 31, not that great 46.8 on 5s with a m445 prop.
one thing that bothers me thougt are the temps, running hot on the 12xl feaigo, esc temps are good and I'm also running the cooling thru the motor first, insted of the esc like I normaly do, motor temps are 140, a little warmer then I like. I'll work it out I'm sure,
I also spaded the battery placement like I belive propperchopper suggested, thats cutting holes in the sponsons and moving the battery outword, this seems to make the boat more stable at higher speeds, It worked for me at 62mph the boat was running nice and true/flat, just on the heel of the sponsons.Comment

dood in that impulse why arent you running 6s and a x6 series prop like m645?Comment

heres where im at with it. got the motor in, seaking 120 and two 4400mah 4s lipos. lid fits over it with no resistance, and now i have some weight in front. im hoping this helps keep it planted. got the str8 turn fin on and l40/57 prop. ill start with the timing at 11.25
