    Motor Issue?

I took my UL1 out today. When I put it in the pond it started out for about 10 seconds but would not get up to speed. It stopped. I was able to get it back to shore but the motor got very hot. Any ideas? Did I burn up the motor or do I need to improve set up? It came with a metal prop set up. Should I switch back to the nylon prop?

You need to provide more information.

    - What batteries
    - What prop (just metal one doesn't help)
    - Stock esc or aftermarket
    - What is "very hot" did you get any temp reading

Thank you for the feedback. It is all stock. I tried to run the boat last week but I couldn't figure out how to get it up on plane. Batteries are 2s 5000. I would like to know if it is the motor, esc or both. I have no idea about the prop. It came with the boat.

It is very important to find out which prop you are using. Remove the prop nut and look on the hub of the prop, the dimensions maybe stamped on the hub. If the prop is tooo big it may led to some of your issues. Also which esc version do you have the older version or the newer version. If you post a pic of your esc we should be able to tell which version it is. The older versions have a few issues which are easily addressed. Also while your removing the prop nut check the gap distance between the drive dog and the strut.

The data on the boat: the prop is a Grim Racer, I believe it reads, "L40 X67." It is metal and has 3 blades. The esc is the old one. I have only ran the boat twice. I did not grease the shaft. I will. Everything was cool to the touch but the motor, but I think the motor was hot because I ran it hard to get it to shore. I ran it about 25 feet with little to no water running through the cooling system. I will grease the shaft and measure the gap. Question; when I try to spin the motor when it is not connected to the battery it does not spin freely, it kinda clicks, my Ms Geico does the same, but my Spartan spins freely, is this normal to have such a variance?

Thanks for the help. I have lots of patience so any advice offered is great!!

That should be a 57 on the end. That's a GREAT prop for that boat. The "click" is cogging it's normal. The reason your spartan doesn't do it is it's a cheap 2 pole motor, the other 2 motors are 6 pole and muuuuuuuch better motors. There are also a lot more reasons because of that but that's not relative to this topic. . Ignore the price Traxxas is charging for that motor, it's junk!

              Some things to try:
              1) it is the stock all black cooling jacket? If it is, upgrade to a nicer one. The stock black one can leak if not properly installed
              2) check and make sure there is no blockage in the cooling system. Easiest way to do that is remove the cooling line from the top of the rudder take a sip of water in your mouth and blow through the system and make sure water is exiting
              3) lubricate your motor bearing
              4) lube your flex shaft really good
              5) LUBE YOUR FLEX SHAFT REALLY GOOD
              6) make sure you have a gap between the drive dog and strut at least the thickness of your flexcable
              7) install a extra capacitor on your esc. This is a big thing to do on the older esc's. Caps are less then $1, you can get some at Radio Shack or here at ose or at kintecracing.com
              8) check all the solder joints

I will follow all your directions and post my progress. One thing, where can I learn how to install an extra capacitor?

                Thanks Diesel6401!!!!!

I only added 1 capp to my old ul1 esc, worked fine for me. Just make sure you pay attention to the polarity on the cap. Hopefully this works out for ya.
