    UL-1 air dam

I just installed my air dam from JRS innovations and this boat came alive. I was having a lot of hopping at the end of straits, but not with the air dam in place. It made this boat run better than it ever has. I didnt have to let off to settle the boat back down at top speed. Here are some pics...

should'ent it be standing up? it only looks about alittle over 1/8 inch thick, just asking because my home made one is about 1/2 inch in depth.

The functional depth of the air dam should be around 1/4". All it needs to do is turbulate the air in the tunnel to reduce the lift. We've made tape air dams for many years - I first did it in 1994 and I leared about it from other FE guys. But the tape air dams fold down somewhat at speed. A solid 1/4" dam should work well. If it doesn't then add another 1/4".

All I know is it made the boat run better than it ever has. 1/4 might just be over kill.

What exactly did they sell you? It looks to be a solid chunk of "something"?

Is it foam or plastic? If it works, what the heck. It did the job but its a bit different then what is commonly seen. Looks like its 1/4" thick? I did the 1/2" corner moulding plastic. Worx fine but always good to see what worx for others.

It is the composite material that he makes his boat stands out of. The best way I can describe it would be the composit decking, but nothing effects it (nitro fuel/gas). It is 1/8" thick. It really doesnt need anything bigger after running it. It might just be over kill to go thicker.

When i raced at the tethered hydro world championships in 1985 ( ic motors) i watched the Russian world record holder stick a match stick across the bottom of his hull. These hulls are only around 2.5" wide, But because of a slight breeze across the water surface he was getting slightly to much lift at the front & holding the speed back 2 or 3 mph. After attatching the match stick as a dam he set a new world record at 135mph in the then 5cc class. Thanks.

What matters is what works. A match stick at 135 mph may create the same turbulence as a 1/2" dam at 40 mph. I use a drinking straw taped under the nose of my 60 mph P Sport Hydro as a dam and it works great.
