Hi all i heard couple of fellow boaters mentioning that running to small off a diameter a prop can also destroy lipo's b/l motors and esc's. Is this true ? If so for e.g using a AQ 2030 kv motor on 4s what would be min dia prop ? What would max dia be without creating a nuclear melt down. Regards Andris Golts.
Correct prop sizing for b/l motors ?

In the days of round cells a few of my club members ran too small diameter props and their BL motors and ESC got hot fast. In that case going to slightly larger props cooled things down - seemed odd but was repeatable. Too small of a prop will not load the motor enough and the excess electrical energy is converted into heat rather than mechanical energy; this is similar to running the motor on the bench without load, gets hot fast. Too high of an rpm can stress some ESCs, but most today are fine unless running an outrunner too fast.
Today I would choose the prop which gives the best performance, just don't choose a motor with an excessive Kv for the voltage and you'll be okay.

M440 3 blade, x442 detonged. Some get away with m445, x642 however there are a few versions of AQ 2030kv motors. The original seemed the best, mid linbe were iffy and the most recent are supposed to be better again.
Others run ABC props. I've never tried them.Nortavlag Bulc
