Does anyone run a flex saver? I lost a flex cable and new prop this morning. I should have replaced the flex before this happened but the boat had been running well for the past 10 or so runs at least. My flex had slipped a few times in the collet and the end had a reduced diameter. It seems like a flex saver is just one more thing to be out of balance in the driveline. Is it common for a flex saver to be used on a high performance boat?

Flex Cable Saver

I run one in my rivercat and it doesn't throw it off balance at all, Ive only watched it while doing a quick bench test though. Obviously can't see what its doing when its going 70 across the lake Lol. It weighs next to nothing though so I don't think it really could throw it off. Just my experience though -
Few run them, but if you have doubts about you cable or collet then using one is not a bad idea. It should be run pushed firmly against the motor coupler, nowhere else. Less chance of any imbalance to cause damage there.

The retaining part of the Aeromarine "seal" is nothing more than a cheap wheel collet. These can damage cables with extensive use since the set screw cuts into the cable. The clamp on type is superior, no cable damage and less chance of loosening.

Thanks Monty. I probably will not run the flex saver. My problem was caused by not cleaning the lube off the end of the cable after it's inserted in the boat AND not getting the collet tight enough. After the flex spun in the collet, the problem just got progressively worse. I ordered the OSE HD flex for the Voracity and it is longer than stock so that should help it grip better. Thank you guys for the help.Comment
