Distance prop/drive dog from strut on 3:16 flex shaft

Guys, how far can the shaft extend from the strut past the strut? Using a speedmaster setup and hughey 3:16 flex shaft. This is for a neu 1527 setup on 6s. My prop is just at the edge of the transom and I need to know if I'm ok to just make the shaft extend longer or if I need an extended strut (its a center mount/under setup). Thanks

Mount the strut , install the drive dog on the shaft , put the shaft in the stuffing box up into the collect measure the distance between the back of the drive dog and the face of the strut , leave yourself 1/8 play between the back or drive dog and the face of the strut,, as the shaft shrinks under load

Thanks das, sorry I wasn't clear - it's all mounted and to get the prop well clear of the transom I'll need to have the drive dog about 1/2-1" past the edge of the strut. I was wondering if that's ok or if the lack of support of the shaft would be an issue. Thanks (I'll try to get some new pics when I get home if this isn't clear)

Did you mount the strut on the inside of the boat ? I don't understand ? PS the shaft needs to be supported at all points besides the 1/8 or so gap !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Is the inside where they recommend to build that hull ?

To answer the question: NO, it is not alright to have a gap of 1/2"-1" between the drive dog and the strut. For 3/16" cable the usual is a gap of 3/16".

Thanks fellas, yes phil runs a floor/center mounted strut successfully on his - here is mine. I will measure my distance again tonight and likely put the extended strut in. Thanks a bunch.

Just set everything up and somewhere between 1/8 and 3/16 gets me where I need to be - thanks! Das I'll be in touch for a prop.

                      Jhl1963.
The rules here in Aussie land for 1/8 scale hydros is that the drive dog shall not extend past the transom. I assume that the same applies over there in the States. That's why the strut is mounted under the boat & not behind the transom like a Sports Hydro. The prop shouldn't hit the transom if you have the strut depth set up correctly.
Here's one of mine temporarily set up.

Someone let me know if the rules are different over there please. Just interested, that's all.

OOPs. My mistake. I thought, for some reason, that it was a 'scale' setup. Not a 'Sport' setup. I should learn to read properly.
