    Propeller Static and Dynamic balancing U-Tube

    Folk's,

    I spent seven years 1970-77 learning and balancing full size racing engines and all types of odd parts. This U-Tube is very good on explanation on propeller balancing and great for those that want to learn more.

    Thanks goes out to Steven of OSE who makes this forum available for ALL of us to use.

    Two notes #1 The motion of the dial indicator needle is NOT RUN OUT remember this when watching the indicator needle. It is showing us the movement of the bearing part of the machine which the propeller is rotating on ...... it is showing us the before being out of Dynamic balance and then after how much smoother the propeller spins AFTER correcting the Dynamic balance. #2 The volume of the speakers is not constant drove me nuts @ 6.00 AM this morning. Ha

          Very educational. I had no idea you need to balance both the leading and the trailing edge of the prop.

            The real question is, do you need this level of balance? When you consider the causes of vibration in a surfacing drive, by far the greatest force is each blade transitioning from air to water. Slapping the water two or three times every revolution has a much greater magnitude than any small dynamic imbalance. Slightly different blade shapes or areas would have a greater effect on vibration as each blade slaps the water. This isn't at all like balancing an engine or an airplane propeller - apples and oranges.

            The video is interesting and I appreciate being directed to it - but I don't know how important this level of perfection is for most of us. I strongly suspect it is an waste of time. You'd be surprised at the static balance (or lack thereof) seen with some record-setting SAW props I've measured......
