Hydro & Marine Shovel, or PTss21

I build mostly wood riggers etc...and I am going to be purchasing my first fiberglass hull soon. I was curious...if any of you have run the h&m 30" shovel on FE or the PTss21 on Fe. If so, what are your setups, speeds and general opinions of these two hulls. I have heard a lot about the ptss21. Would love to hear opinions on the Hydro & Marine shovel (the hawaii kai hull, on fine design rc) is this really a 60 mph hull..like I have heard?
    pics would help a lot.

    Thank you.

Both boats can go 55-60. The H&M takes more tuning to get it there. I've run both and both require sponson mods to get them to reliably run in that speed range.

I have an H&M shovel that Brian modded the sponsons on. Neu 1515 1Y,Hydra 240, 4S2P 35C 5000 Elites, X642, modded Kintec turn fin, 8 0z. lead in the nose. Runs in the low sixties all day long with way more prop possible. Temps reasonable & conserative amp draw, so I'm not pushing it any further. A little jumpy until up to flat out speed but settles in nicely in the straights, still dialing in the trim. Turns well if not smoothly at speed . I'm pretty sure the PT would make a better heat race boat from what I've read, BTW. Hoping my new build, the 30" Vegas FE conversion works out, just finished it today[see build thread]. Will test run next week.

You can put enough power in almost any hull of this size and go 60 mph; the real question is how reliable will it be? Will you have to wait for glass-smooth water and no wind, or can it run in any reasonable condition?

One of our club members has a SS21 (one of Brian's old hulls) that is surprisingly stable in some pretty rough race water and wind - in fact in almost two years of racing I can only remember it flipping once, and we race six heats a month. It runs in the high-50s in an oval heat - most speed quotes you read are on flat water running alone. I have not seen the H&M hull run, but I'd expect it to be a little less versatile and require more tuning to keep it reliable in varied conditions.

One important thing to note is that the PT hull will require a LOT of work filling pin holes, priming and painting if you want a nice finish. The H&M hull has a quality gelcoat from the factory and can be run with nothing more than stickers - if that.

I agree with you Jay. Funny thing is, I was ready to start a PT & then KevinLew's H&M came along so I picked it up for some fun running. Second time I was ready to get a PT Paul Pachmeyer offered the Vegas for a reasonable price so there you go. I can't find a race within a 400 mile radius so I mess around with the IC crowd at Legg mostly. The H&M is a wild ride in gasser water & I'm sure the Vegas won't do any better, but I'm just a driving impared pond blaster anyway having some fun in the meantime.

            Thanks guys for the info.
What sponson mods need to be done to both to run upper 50s+ ? is it similar to the dunlap mods for the miss vegas? flattening and adding more AOA ?

I understand about the finishing of the ptss21 hull. I love building so the filling should be easy, just takes time. From what I gathered, the h&m shovel..is a fast boat, with lots of tuning...but still flighty in rough water. ? and the ptss21 can be stable...with 4s2p and lots of tuning as well...with less work done to the sponsons? This is what I got from all of your posts combined. Correct me if I am wrong please.

            HHmmm...price wise...they are about 80 dollars difference..give or take.

I will keep reading...anyone have a pic or two, or vids of either boats, and lipo placement in them.

            Thanks again all.

Fluid....I'd love to see pics of that red white blue ss21 from your club. Do they have any of the inside?

Brian Baus. Can you elaborate or show pics of the sponson mods required to both hulls? Would be greatly appreciated.
