For us old motocross racers it was WFO (Wide F----ing Open) They even printed it in the magazines like that.

German- Roger DeCoster (sp) was my hero. Running Suzuki. Went to a national event in the 70s at little St. Peter's Missouri and got to see all the legends.

Boy, do I remember ! I raced Open class CMC & AMA in 69' & '70 with "WFO" quarter-turn throttles. I remember the day when the Europeans showed up & cleaned our clocks

I did not know what handling was until my best friend was sponsored by a Penton dealer (now KTM) and just ate the Japs bikes alive in handling. He should have gone pro but decided to open his own business and make some real money. It was one of the first with a 21" front wheel....the thing sounded like a jet. 6 gears and a super soft thick seat...unheard of.

I almost made it to Loretta Lynn's qualifier in 2006 but crashed out in my Regional qualifier at Ponca City Nationals.

Talking about the hardest thing you will ever do trying to make it in the big times in Motocross, Takes lots of the cash too haha.

How did we get to this subject ..

Tony, I raced cmc in 68, 69 and 70. And again in '74. I raced for Mitco Bultaco. Back then Gary Bailey was the best American rider. That guy would ride the 100, 125, 250 and open classes in the same day. He would finish one heat, park that bike and get on the next bike; but he would get beat when the Europeans came over.

Greg, I knew I recognized you from somewhere ! Wasn't that you I crashed into in practice at Carlsbad ? J/K. I tried racing 250's with a '69 Pursang but it was just a TT-tuned bike with a 21" front wheel & flat bars; too pipey for my lard butt. Switched to a Maico 360 & raced for Tatro Machine in '69 & 70. My back still hurts . That adobe mud from the Carlsbad track tasted like crap also !
