I am pleased to find this site, very informative and helpful! I am new to RC Boating, although I have extensive technical knowledge and RC Car & Truck experience. I have a Traxxas Villain that I'm currently working on. I have upgraded my drive tubes and replaced all bushings with bearings. I have also purchased some Octura props, polished, sharpened and balanced them. Now it's time to purchase new motors, speed control and batteries. This is where I need advice. I'm not sure that I need a brushless setup after reading various threads. If I were to install the EVX 14.4 volt speed control, what motors would be best to get maximum performance? I'm open to suggestions. Thanks!

well, to get maximum performance, i would use twin 15 turn double reedy sonic motors...
you will have to adjust the timingof one motor to be the exact opposite of the other motor....
someone has already tried this (he used the tekin 432M speed control..., i dont know if the stock villain EX control can handle that low turn of a motor)
heres his site..
here are some vids of the villain he modded
in the details of both vids, there are links to higher quality windows mobies player versions of the vids...Last edited by saleens7; 06-19-2007, 12:30 PM.saleens7, the wookie of rc boating -
too bad the tekin 432M isnt made anymore....and if you posted a bit earlier, someone was selling it for 60$ (it retailed for 250$)....there are other esc's...the RC-Hydros's victory esc (on this site) is probably the BEST brushed esc out there....i dont know if it can handle a motor with as low as 15 turns..ill have to ask him...youll also need to wire the motors in parallel so they both receive 14.4 volts...saleens7, the wookie of rc boatingComment

I like the specs and the price for the Victory ESC. If I purchased this ESC, what would be a good motor and battery combo? I could hook up two motors in parallel with this ESC? I see the 90 amp cont rating, shouldn't be a problem hooking up two 17T or two 19T motors with some hot cells huh?Comment

it also has a 450amp surge current....Andy Kunz makes these things bullet proof (metaphoricaly speaking)...i still think you should just try twin 15 turn motors on 14 cells...its already been tested with great results....
you will need different props though....the villain uses a 4mm threaded prop shaft right?

counterclockwise rotation)

you can also purchase the upgrade propshaft so it accepts 3/16 shaft props so you have a wider range to choose from

carbon props

you said you had extensive knowledge of rc cars and trucks...
so do you know how to adjust the timing on a brushed motor? i know if you set the timing of one motor the exact opposite of the same motor both will turn the same rpms only one will turn counterclockwise...i dont know how to do that, but you should and will have to so both motors run the same rpmssaleens7, the wookie of rc boatingComment

im not sure about hooking 2 motors to it but i am sure if you are going direct drive i would go with a higher turn motor.......while rpm plays a role in speed there is a balance between....... a motor with a kv of 3500 on directdrive would simply burn up everything....... gear it down correctly and it will perform well..... my suggestion is if you want to stay with a brushed setup would be either the traxxas marine motors on direct drive or the 700 speed motors..... the only problem with that would be the output shaft on the 700 is 5mm....... if i were you i would use flexshafts instead of those univ coup they use on the stock o/d....... if you choose to do the traxxas motors you wont have this problem but i would still get rid of the coupleras......as for speed on the villian...... without really investing a lot of time and money you wont see speeds over 30mph....... if your just looking to pickup a few mph then you headed in the right track....... if i were you i would talk to avengersteve about 2 aquacraft motors and esc...... that will push you wellll over 30.....and it would be a fast reliable sport boat that would catch the eye of alot of onlookers at your local pond60% of the time... it works every time!Comment

ps brushless systems are more reliable.....less maint......and more efficient......longer runtimes.....more speed60% of the time... it works every time!Comment

the traxxas villain uses a gear system to lower the rpm, how else do you think it turns those HUGE props with those little stinger 500 motor?
yeah, i kind of agree with hammertime, if you plan to do get this villain to go really fast, you should trash the stock driveline and use a flexshaft....two of those titan motors (if you run them in a series, so each one gets 1/2 of the total voltage) and use 14-16 cells on direct drive you could see a big increase of speed....or just get the villain EX esc and use the 19turn upgrade motors...
you still going to spend alot of money, i think someone said the villain EX esc is like 180$...i could be wrong though...
i just read this
http://www.offshoreelectrics.com/inf...ring-motor.php
it says running motors in parallel will most likely blow the esc, motor, or batts...but the villain runs the in parallel...so im beginning to think maybe running in parallel wont be good...i think the 15 turn motors that one guy used on his heavily modded villain were running in a series instead...saleens7, the wookie of rc boatingComment

the above mentioned aquacraft motors and esc from avengersteve, brushless stuff? maybe i should consider brushless if i'm gonna spend a couple hundred bucks anyway? i have no experience with brushless, actually most of my experience with RC is nitro......Comment

i know there is gear reduction in the villian i own one lol....... but to get any results with this thing its going to cost......thats why i said to get the aquacraft systems...... by the time you spend the money on a speed control that may or may not work and experiments......you could have already had something you know works and will work well..... not to mention its easier to run counter rotation for new people with brushless..... just an opinion.... i have learned all this stuff the hard way thousands of dollars down the drain...... biggest one when i was a newbie i bought a novak brushless system.....a car system....... and it blew up on me 300 bucks down the drain..... trust me a wise man "sjfe" once told me when i started..... stick wioth whats already proven to be reliable....60% of the time... it works every time!Comment
