Why are some rudders directly behind the prop and others off to the side?

I've been trying to browse Ebay to see what is out there but I'm not finding much except toy grade boats...

So I guess that the 1600KV 80mm Medeusa would be a good choice for 5S also?

Cheaper Feigao is a better choice and just as fast if matched correctly.

I agree that they are cheaper but I've not had the best luck with quality. Seems like they get hot easily.

I see a Pro Boat Shockwave 36 nitro on Ebay. Would that be feasable to convery to electric? What all would be involved?

Generally, centered rudders (behind the prop) are used on Catamaran hulls and the offset rudders on Mono hulls. Why? not sure! Can anyone else help with this?

You are better off watching the SWAP SHOP here than going on ebay. The guys are not as likely to sell you junk!

Actually centered rudders are used on all model types, even hydros. They are used for several reasons:
              - they provide improved low speed steering for small ponds
              - they can, sometimes, give better turnng to the right for offshore racing
              - they appeal to inexperienced boaters who think they look more scale

For "fast" electric boats they have major liabilities:
              - they are less efficient running in the aerated water coming off the prop
              - they can cause wandering due to the "bubbly" water
              - they cause more drag the offset rudders
              - their longer linkages can have more deflection hurting steering precision
              - they hang further off the transom and are more prone to damage

I have no problem turning left and right with a right-offset rudder on my cats and monos. It just has to be deep enough on monos to stay in the water during a banking left turn.
