    Rex,
Get some Krylon Fusion in the color of your choice, and their clear (mystic prizim effect)
Follow the directions and it is just about fool proof! No sanding no fuss. Remove any fingerprints and paint it.
I don't know how many of these I have built, and haven't had the paint lift off of any of them.
    Good luck, post some pics!

Rex, I had the same dilemma, I had to use the cans...
it really depends on how much of each color you will spray,
if it's one color, I'd go with at least 2 cans + base coat and 2 cans of clear (depending on how much shine you need.
Mild scuffing is a good idea although Krylon (plastic version) seem to stick pretty well and dries very quick.
I used almost 2 cans of each color and the crappy clear I used was too thin and it's coming off already, I need something thicker... attached is pic of my Pickle so you have an idea of what I am talking about.

It's difficult to get Krylon paints here in Aus, so Phil Pace from Vac-u-Boats told me to prime mine with Plasikote primer, then I should be able to use regular enamels. I'm actually painting it today (primed it a few days ago), so I'll let you know how it goes! The primer goes on really nicely.

That is what I did to mine Scott and the paint stayed on really well and looked a treat till I smashed her. Good luck and some pics of them painted would be nice.

Is this boat fg or plastic? You can buy spray can adhesion promoter such as Bull Dog to paint plastic and make it stick really well. I paint cars for a living, and have to deal with just about every type of plastic and metal under the sun. Plus my stuff has to last! I use regular automotive basecoat on my boats, topped with urethane clear. However you can use the Bull Dog adhesion promoter and any type of spray paint to achieve good lasting results. Not sure how good the spray can clear coat is, but I am sure it will add some shine and durability.

Kilz spray primer will stick to almost anything...I use it, then Krylon primer, then Krylon paint (sanding in between all coats). No problems!!

biggest 'problem' (with paint) is the 'high impact styrene' , a number of paints are incompatable w/ it. abs poses no big problem with standard krylon(though you should go easy on the 1st couple of coats).
