    ABC Hobby Fighter 550

a friend of my dad dropped by today and since he knew i was into building rc boats, he brought over his sons abc hobby figter 550...its a 20" crackerbox powered by an M&Y 550SH motor....its got a mechanical speed control and a stick transmitter, so i guess its a somewhat old boat....the steering servo and radio tray came loose, so im epoxying that back up for him....ill take it uot for a run today once the epoxy dries (if that big sotrm outside doesent decide otherwise...)\

here are a few pics.....the anvil (:D ) is there to hold the steering servo and radio tray down...

the weather finally calmed down, so i took it out for another run, this time i switched to a 3600mah batt...goes alot faster now...it hops completely out of the water except the prop and rudder...i couldnt film is though, it was still raining, not enough to worry about the Tx getting wet, but enough not to take out the cam...

well, that stock setup got to hot...melted the solder on the mechanical speed control's wires....so i took it all out and put in that 600 plane motor and proboat esc and it works great, there is around a 1-2mph increase...hardly noticable, since its out of control at all times (bounces WAY too much)....i just wish they had a better way to hold down the batts....they used double sided tape....didnt work that well....my batt came loose and made the bounce even worse....im going to try to mount it further up front so it helps a bit....

even with the few problems it has and the bouncing, its still a very fun boat...

crackerbox boats are notorious for 'rough riding' on anything other than no wind glass like water. velcro 'ties' and or applied directly to hull and packs do a lot toward preventing unwanted battery movement.

....the problem is i dont have velcro ties....this thing bouces on glass smooth water too...i really dont mind too much....when i get the power source and lipo balancer for the triton, i think im going to get a 2 cell lipo for this...the shaft came loose today, i epoxied it back in and i also epoxied some zip ties in to hold the batt...

hmmm would you happen to have a pic showing where the pack(s) are supposed to go? is it an abs hull? I rather like using 2" wide velcro to hold my packs (hook side on the hull loop on the packs).

well, the thing is the packs dont rest on a flat area...there are two raised areas 1" by 3/4" that both end of the batt lie on...and then there is a lowered part to allow a zip tie to hold the batt down....it used double sided tape...it didnt last...
