Recently, on a cable fishing channel, I saw some ads for a hand-held device that "shoots" out the line, bob and hook. Doubt if it launched far enough to get a boat out on the course but it has me thinking; hmmm....

I use the tennis ball but it only works as far as you can throw. When its to far i have a little push boat that has a fishing line tied on to it. The fishing line is on a reel and a rod that I stick in the ground and then I send out the boat, circle the other boat one time and pull it back. I have 100 yards that distance i can go.

Yes ..i can push it back with the foam bumper in the front or tow it back via fishing line. Its a 16 inch Miss budweiser cheapo boat off ebay.

I use the Tennis ball method. I drill through the Tennis ball and push a peice of small PVC tubing through both holes in the ball...just make sure the PVC will be long enough to extend out of both holes. Then I seal around both sides of the tube where it meets the ball with Sillicone caulk (to keep water from getting in the ball. Now you can easily thread fishing line through the ball with ease!! I use Teflon line so it will not break easily. Make a couple of them just in case you snap one off!!

Another ball I use for retreival is a Whiffle Ball. I use spray foam isulation inside the ball, let dry and then shave the foam off that has squirted out of the holes. The ball will have no trouble floating and the foam adds weight to it...you can even add lead weights to it before you spray the foam in!! The PVC thing will work here too (for threading fishing line)...

I can see that this has gone from tennis ball to retrieval methods.
                I se a tennis ball too.......for short range, 100' (30m) or less
I have a short length of broom shaft with a fishing reel on it and one of those things that dog owners use to throw a tennis ball for thier pooch.
Accuracy is ok and range is good to about 100'

Beyond that I use my tow boats.

Worst case I have to drive home (15 min round trip) and get my kayak
to paddle to the end of the pond and get the hydro out of the reeds because the rudder was broken off and I was on a straight pass at the time and I did notice that it was veering a little to the right........

                Anyway.
The ball is attached by a very technical method called wind it around a few times and tape it up.

I can do pics if anyone really needs them.

Just run the fishing line through the ball and attach a grapple hook made of piano wire at the end of the line, you can easily adjust the ball/grapple distance by sliding the ball along the fishing line so that the grapple "catches" the boat!

As anyone tried a water rocket as retrieval "device", one 1.5litter (.4Gal) coke bottle can "fly horizontal" for more than 300' at 6 or 7bar?

Why don't you just throw the ball with your HAND? And...Don't you own a fishing pole?! I guess you just have a short broom! LOL!!...J/K!!

I laugh too at my throwing skills.
Throwing a ball by hand that is towing a line, I could hit a barn door if I was stood in front of it. Trust me, I tried the throw thing and it is good for 25m /70'

                      With the "dog-ball" thrower I can do 30+m / 100'

Beyond that I can not be bothered to try harder as I always have the patrol-tow boat on the bank ready to go.

ED's idea of the water rocket has some merit as do a few other ideas that I have floating in my mind. Anyone here seen a Schermully(sp) rocket line thrower ??
