    RTR versus build your own

I would like to suggest that if you are thinking of entering FE boating do a search of all the forums on this site. If you have a soldering iron, drill and an ability for marginal hobby skills buy a bare hull and all the hardware etc from OSE. The members will guide you through the build and motor/ESC/prop/battery/radio process and be honest with your expectations and budget

I like to take an RTR and make my own out of it. So which one must I choose?

By the time someone reads your post chances are they already bought an RTR and are looking even further into the hobby now cause they "caught" the FE Addiction. RTR's for newbies are a great way to grow our hobby/sport and for them to understand the hydrodynamics, science and physics surrounding this hobby/sport. Once the testicles' dropped then they can move into something a little faster, a little pricier, and a little less RTR. My point is the RTR's are usually what draw people into these sites in the first place thus completing the FE Circle of Life .

I'm wasting my money when I buy stuff, abandon the project and give it away as a freebie.
Modding an RTR to me is fun and a challenge. It's what I enjoy. I don't knock your drinking as a waste of money because I don't drink.

Very well said, but a person who does not do research, as I did, is going to be upset and then get on forums and try to increase the speed of a hull that is not capable of a 10% performance upgrade even at great expense.

10% upgrade? Do you have a link? LOL

I know that after being out of RC for over 10 years, a lot had changed. While I didn't run boats way back when, I did run hovercrafts and scratch built ones at that.

When I got back into the hobby, I picked up a BJ26BL. It was a good first boat for me. It allowed for some tweaking, modification, etc. and most of all, it helped me learn the dynamics and ride characteristics of small boats on the water. So I guess I'm on the fence on this one. I figure, get something to run, modify, build/mod something else and reapply the things you've learned to the previous purchase.

What do I know anyway? Nothing and that's why I'm here learning! So back to the subject at hand, where do I find this 10%?

I found that an rtr was a good way to learn about this hobby. I ran nitro trucks for years before I got into boats. I bought an sv an learned on that, once I got an understanding of how it all works I started building my own boats. I'm glad I made my mistakes on a 300 dollar boat, not a 600-800 dollar boat. Eventually everyones going to want to go faster and rtrs have there limits for speed and handling.
