This is going to depend on so many variables.

What boat will it go on ?
Are you looking for outright speed or to have a fun boat with good run time.?
What battery packs do you have now if any ?

I have the Academy OB and run it on the F1 tunnel so I know the outboard that you have. I had a Kyosho one a while ago too.

If you have a photo of the boat that would be good or at least a name or model of the boat that you have.

The more info that you can give the better the advise that you will recieve.

The hot shot tunnel is 27" long if it is the one I think it is.

For fun you could go with a S size BL motor with a 1/8"shaft that will be a direct bolt on to the existing OB unit.
Then grab a Mystery 100A off e-bay and run 6-7 Nimh cells to it.

If you are going to go with brushless then I can strongly reccomend that you go lipo too, unless you have some very good Ni cells and the will to care for them.
It took me a long time to go BL and even longer to go Lipo. Now I do not look back.
The price of the higher power systems is so low these days that is it is a no brainer to go BL+Lipo.

If you must stay with Nimh then go for a 8S and feed it with 6-8 cells
If you choose to go Lipo then go with a higher wind (12S) and use 3S Lipo.

These are reccomendations based on what I have and run.
Hang about and I am sure there will be other ideas too.

If I were to run that hull on a S size BL Motor I would be looking at a 432 for kickoff. Do not give that OB too much stick as it will give it back.

Trust me If I had that hull the first thing to go would be the Kyosho leg.

Yes I am a Kiwi too.
Local supplies are a bit tricky.
When I can I will use High Performance Models in Browns Bay on the shore.
I get a few small bits locally on line from a variety of suppliers here in NZ.

Big items such as motors and ESC's and battery packs come from overseas.
OSE (here) is a good place for most of that the rest can be found online.
Search or ask and you will find.

If I'm not mistaken the K&B 3.5 is a nitro No? not sure how you want to modify this. Is there an adapter for this or are you thinking of making one? I ask because I have the K&B 7.5 and was thinking of doing something similar.

I believe you can buy adapter sets for K&B lowers.
When I ever get hold of one I will do the conversion myself.
With that lower you can easily run a S motor but you could also move up to the SV power package.

There are a bunch of threads here about tunnels. The VS-1 and TS-2 spring to mind. Find them and have a good read about OB conversion and suggested power setups.

You are going to be a bit higher than what I have experience in.
