What's your opinion on my prososed setup?

    Hey all

Time to buy an ESC for my boat project. I have a 27" mono with a Feigao 540L motor that pulls a max of 44 amps. I have a small plastic prop for now, and for the time being I have a 6 cell 7.2V pack that I'll use until I can afford LiPos later this year. I found this ESC while browsing OSE...

    http://www.offshoreelectrics.com/pro...od=xpo-blb100a

I noticed it has no BEC but that's ok because I have a Rx pack from my nitro truck. Other than that I don't see anything wrong with it...never heard of this brand however. I am competent of soldering on 5.5mm bullets for the motor and deans for the battery...don't worry about that. Will the ESC work on my project? Anyone else use this ESC and have any feedback?

    I really appreciate it.
    -Mike. :)

That esc is good but it will depend on a lot of other things.

Where my concern is the motor and pack.
Which 540L is it, do you know the wind or KV # of it.
What mAh is your pack ?
Will you be running submerged drive or surface drive ?
Which samll plastic prop ? I have loads so do not think I am bagging plastic props.
Can you post a pick of the hull ?

What do you want out of the boat ? Sport / fun, casual racing ?

I know I have asked you more questions than you did but the more info that you can give will help you to get the best answers.
    See it....find the photos.....sketch it it....build it........with wood

It is the 1755kV 540L motor...which I found out pulls 44 amps max. Will be watercooled as will the ESC.

Battery is 7.2V 3000 mAh, I also have a 8.4V 4600 mAh I could use. Again, can't afford LiPos until later this year.

Submerged prop. I don't know which specific prop yet. I bought all 3 of the plastic props from Octura, and I was gonna try each and note the performance and temperatures.

It's just a fun boat. No serious racing here. Just something that I can bring to my local lake and have fun with. It's a Kyosho Viper hull, by the way :)

      Thanks for your continued support
      -Mike

        ...I have a 27" mono with a Feigao 540L motor that pulls a max of 44 amps....
That Feigao can pull far more than 44 amps, that is just the recommended maximum amps. You control the amp draw by the voltage and the load. The load is either the prop size of the size/resistance of the hull. Your Feigao L motor can pull well over 100 amps with enough voltage and/or load.

It is tough to tell your amp draw without a datalogger, but as long as you keep the voltage under control and don't use a prop that is too big you 'probably' won't get into trouble. This is the problem with using low rated ESCs, if you don't really know your amp dray how can you choose the appropriate ESC? The best route is to buy the best ESC you can afford, or use the experience of others with similar setups.

I do realize 44 amps is a ballpark estimate.....here's where I got that number from
          http://www.offshoreelectrics.com/fei...tors-chart.php

But I think surely a 100A ESC should be ok? my prop is very small as well and I'm not putting too many volts into it

Your setup sounds very similar to the UL-1. Run 2 batteries and the grimracer 4052/3 blade prop. This prop is one of the 3-4 props recommended for this 27", 2030kv motor, setup. The UL-1 also uses a 60 amp esc which would make the 100amp esc your looking at more than ok to use without problems. YES the motor can draw more amps but it shouldn't jepordize the 100amp esc. Personally I don't see a problem with your setup.

Here is a link to the UL-1 specs.

Cool. For now, do you think it's o.k. to just use one of the Octura plastic props I have until I can afford a metal one?

Also, should I run the two batteries in series or parallel.....I know series doubles voltage and parallel doubles run time but which configuration should I do?

              Thank you!

Which 3 props do you have? As they are all different sizes and pitches. As for your battery setup. Ask yourself what you want. Run time or speed? Either way if you setup the boat for parallel make an adapter for series or vice versa so you can choose which setup you feel like running at the time.

Upon further thought, I have changed my plans a little bit. I think I am going to buy a Turnigy 120A ESC instead, because it is cheaper, has a BEC and capable of more amps. I'll have to wait for more stock to arrive but it should work out in the end, and I have heard good things about it.

Battery setup I'll worry about after I get all the components installed.

Here are the 3 props I own:

                  http://www.offshoreelectrics.com/products.php?cat=124

This weekend I'll be ordering a drive shaft (straight style, not going to mess with a flex shaft), water outlets, prop nut, and cable grease...along with other random necessities.

                  Thanks for the help everyone!
