    Question: motor and esc amp

    Hey guys,

Can a 125 amp Etti esc handles a 9xl motor? What is the total amp?

A 9XL is 74A max. it'll handle it with ease.

There is a lot of confusion about the amperage a certain motor will use. Believe me, a 9XL can draw far more than 74 amps! Depending on the prop it can draw well over 100 amps; the "rating" is the recommended amp draw to use as a guideline, not the maximum the motor can draw. Connect a 9XL to 6S and an x648 prop and you'll pull over 150 amps. Keep it on 4S with an m440 in a loose hull and it will pull less than 100 amps. It's all in the setup.

This is one reason so many folks have problems with their ESCs - they don't realize how much amperage a certain setup will draw and they underestimate the total current when choosing an ESC. Get the highest amp rating you can afford and you'll have fewer problems.

Let me re-phrase the answer I gave.

A 9XL is 74A max unloaded. it'll handle it with ease.

          Edit:
My mistake Ed, the 74A rating is what the motor will pull long term w/o overheating.

Diegoboy, how can a motor pull 74A while unloaded???
74A is a number given by Feigao according to the max voltage they can handle (36V has been confirm to me by Feigao) and the internal resistance!
but as Fluid say, these motor can pull more and I confirm, my 8XL on my 29" mono (DF copy) pulls 97A peak (recorded with EagleTree) with a K42 carbon prop under 4S, just an example

BTW a 9XL unloaded amp draw is 2.5A according to Feigao's datasheet!
