    P Sport Hydro Options

I read a lot of posts asking about what hull to run in P Sport Hydro. There are not a lot of competitive options, but there are a few. The Phil Thomas SS21 and the Whiplash 20 are two well-known and highly competitive hulls. Several others are well-known to be dogs. Last year I wanted to build a new P Sport but wanted something different, so I decided on an Aeromarine Sport 21.

This is a big hull, 33" long and heavy by Aeromarine standards. Is has butt jointed seams, not shoebox construction, so it looks cleaner than most AM hulls. The sponson design is 1980s vintage and the look is pure 7-liter from that period. Still, I put it together and couldn't be happier with its performance. I run a Neu 1521/1.5D on 4S2P with SpeedMaster hardware and a G&M turn fin - the boat is a blast to drive. Weighing almost 10 pounds, it doesn't act that heavy and acceleration is instant. On the 1/6th mile course it can hang with the PTSS21 just fine, and its weight holds it down even in windy conditions. The Dallas regional race last weekend was a great test, the big course with wind and chop proved the boat's mettle. It is the best P Sport Hydro I've built in over 10 years, and is a lot of fun to drive in race water.

Some have said this is a good LSH hull. I cannot agree with that at all! It is heavy and needs the power of the 1521 to really come alive. One racer who tried it in LSH races overheated or burned up Aquacraft and ProBoat motors. Can't consider that a good setup, at least not IMO. Run on rough water to keep it freed up and it may work okay, but on smoother water expect to be buying new motors. Keep it adequately powered and it rocks!

Do you regret not getting the PTSS21? It does look a bit heavy, is there video's of this hull out there yet?

Absolutely not. I regularly race against a PT SS1 built by Buaas with Neu 1515/1Y power and both boats are equal in performance; the winner depends on driving and racing luck. The heavier hull definately works better in the windy conditions we usually have to race. We usually have to add weight to our hydros wnysay, they all have too much lift for modern FE power.

Tony, I'm in the Middle East so no pics. It looks similar to the UL-1 fin but about 40% larger and much thicker.
You can call Gary Preusse at 630-279-2451. Ask for the Sport 20 fin, either curved or bent.

Thanks Jay. As soon as I finish my current project I intend to build an Aero 33.

Nope, I'm in Nimr Oman, about 10 hours by truck from Muscat. Desert everywhere, no trees, etc, but quite a few wild camels wandering around. I'm staying in a bedouin tent - nice rugs.........

Fluid ......what kind of speed did you see with it your boat? You answered a few questions a while back and it was a big help with my Bandit Larsany hydro. I just had a bad blow over and really hurt the boat good so i just swaped over to a Miss Attitude hull and unfortunatly it comes in 11 oz over the bandit.{ Best run was 74mph} Any tips before i run it? I know its going to be slower with the added weight but i will see Monday night. It has a 1521 1.5 D , 240 hydra ,22 volts ,M645 prop. Thanks for your time.
PT-45, 109mph, finally gave up after last bad crash
                  H&M 1/8 Miss Bud 73 mph
                  Chris Craft 16 mph

Sorry, by the time I got back from the Middle East I had forgotten about this thread. Another month of racing and I am still more than pleased with the big hydro. I have settled on the P230 prop and have GPS speeds in race heats of over 58 mph on a short 1/10th mile course. On the big 1/6th mile course it flys! I did make a small mod by cutting off the airtraps under the hull. This allows me to run the boat without an air dam in the front of the tunnel and not be too light on the water.

                      The G&M turn fin:

Jay, thanks for the info. I'm just learning hydro setup and have found that turn fins are obviously an important variable in the handling equation. Jan from Kintec sent me some blanks and I'm playing around with fin configurations for the H&M 31" shovel. I've found that the Fuller fin works splendidly on the UL-1, BTW. The more I run at Legg Lake, which seems always to duplicate racewater conditions due to the large gasser population churning it up, the more I am beginning to agree that larger, heavier hulls properly set up are the way to go. I just picked up an AQ Vegas hull with the thought of going P-Sport, but it's pretty fragile compared to Aeromarine hulls so it's likely to become a P-Spec boat with a UL-1 motor. Since I have a spare 1521 1.5D it looks like I'll build the Aero 33" for P-sport. As usual, may have to pick your brain for some setup tips when the time comes. Welcome home, Sir !

Tony, for anyone who wants to run this hull with full P Sport Hydro power (not LSH) I would strongly recommend that they have Aeromarine make the hull without the airtraps. Originally I had to use an air dam to keep the boat on the water - now that I cut the traps off I no longer need the air dam to make the boat behave. Aeromarine has always been very accommodating when asked for small custom changes, and deleting the air traps is pretty easy for them to do.
