I read a lot of posts asking about what hull to run in P Sport Hydro. There are not a lot of competitive options, but there are a few. The Phil Thomas SS21 and the Whiplash 20 are two well-known and highly competitive hulls. Several others are well-known to be dogs. Last year I wanted to build a new P Sport but wanted something different, so I decided on an Aeromarine Sport 21.
This is a big hull, 33" long and heavy by Aeromarine standards. Is has butt jointed seams, not shoebox construction, so it looks cleaner than most AM hulls. The sponson design is 1980s vintage and the look is pure 7-liter from that period. Still, I put it together and couldn't be happier with its performance. I run a Neu 1521/1.5D on 4S2P with SpeedMaster hardware and a G&M turn fin - the boat is a blast to drive. Weighing almost 10 pounds, it doesn't act that heavy and acceleration is instant. On the 1/6th mile course it can hang with the PTSS21 just fine, and its weight holds it down even in windy conditions. The Dallas regional race last weekend was a great test, the big course with wind and chop proved the boat's mettle. It is the best P Sport Hydro I've built in over 10 years, and is a lot of fun to drive in race water.
Some have said this is a good LSH hull. I cannot agree with that at all! It is heavy and needs the power of the 1521 to really come alive. One racer who tried it in LSH races overheated or burned up Aquacraft and ProBoat motors. Can't consider that a good setup, at least not IMO. Run on rough water to keep it freed up and it may work okay, but on smoother water expect to be buying new motors. Keep it adequately powered and it rocks!
