I ran a 12xl on 8S in my Mean machine last season for sport. This was using a 1.22:1 geared tranny, Hacker master navy 77 and an M440 prop.
Seemed to work okay for me.

This year it will be going direct drive, I'll prop down a little and let you all know how it goes

I did run the MM on 8S with the transmission as I stated, best speed with an M440 was 57.2mph. This year it will be running direct drive. I will post a video when I test it.

I think that Jay will chime in, as all his hobby FE life, he wants to help and support the hobby, but he is getting older like me and we see some silly questions..yours warrants an answer from Jay.

My setup from last year has at least 20 runs on it (probably more), temps on the motor never got hotter than 135 degrees, same with the batteries. The Hacker 77 never got over 120. For sport, it works. I've done it.
It was Fluid who originally coached me on dialing in my cat when it was running on 24 nimh, same setup.

With a transmission it goes out the window as far as many specifications.

1.22:1 is not steep gearing, propping down some will more than compensate for changing to 1:1. I'm assuming you've tried this and it failed?
