    Need some help

Hey all. I'm new to this forum, and to R/C boating, but I have run R/C cars for years. I just bought a hull from a friend, and I need some electronics, but I'm not sure where to start. I need to use a BRUSHED motor until I can save up again for brushless. I do realize brushless is better (I run 4 brushless cars) but I need to run a brushed for now.

Here are pics and stuff: http://forums.thetoyz.com/index.php?showtopic=18343
    Here are more specs...

mono hull (the most common hull around...)
    front to back: 63 cm
    left to right: 22 cm
    550 sized motor needed
will be using 6 Ni-Mh cells (total of 7.2 volts) or possibly 7 Ni-Mh cells (8.4 v total)

I was looking at possibly using this ESC...

    http://www.offshoreelectrics.com/pro...rod=dh-prb2314

So I need brushed 550 motor suggestions. There are many out there.

    Also need prop suggestions.

If you would like to see pictures, please view this link

Thanks for your help guys. I really do appreciate it.

Sorry, to be rude but toss out all that car crap and view/search this site for some answers to boats, then come back with what you want to achieve

I know the car crap in that boat doesn't work. Those pictures are old. IGNORE THE ESC AND MOTOR IN THOSE PICTURES!!!

The whole reason I am here is to get suggestion on 550 sized motors that I can use with...
      a) the above ESC
      b) a Nimh battery
      c) My sized boat.

I've been looking around this forum for an hour and I'm still struggling to find an answer to my question...that's why I made this post!

Looks like OSE is out of stock of motor you would want but a brand name 22T truck motor would be great in that size boat. Lots of torque to spin a good size prop. I would imagine you may see 15-18mph. Perhaps even a 19T modified but its been a while.

That Graupner motor is OK and the ESC is OK but you will be much better off with a brushless setup in the long run. Are you just looking for a fun boat or is speed of importance? State what speed and run times you wish to achieve, as you may want to review this project.

Mostly, this will be a fun boat. It is likely there will be inexperienced people driving it, and so I need to keep it slow and relatively cheap. That's why I would like to used brushed.

I was hoping for about 10 or 15 mph, and around 10 mins run time. Give or take.

10-15 mph and 10-15min runs is easy if you go BL.
The guys here know that I am one of the most stubborn men on earth.
I stuck with and pushed brushed for FAR longer than necessary.
It cost me a lot of coins and nearly lost me a couple of boats due to arcing and radio glitching.
I still have 2 brushed boats, one is my fast ( 5mph) rescue boat and the other is a big tug I am still finishing.
I know the pain and cost of BL but believe me man it is well worth it.
To put it all in context I have been a Lipo runner for a month now.
Yes I ran Ni cells untill then and now really wonder wtf I was up to.

Brushed motors and Ni cells DO work in boats. Slow to mid speed and short range.
There have been some VERY fast brushed boats and still are but the motors need a LOT of care and maintenance.

My advice is to go BL.

There will be many varied opinions given and you must make your own decisions.
                See it....find the photos.....sketch it it....build it........with wood

As Simon says brush less is really the way to go and thanks to China you can buy decent stuff at a very good price

You will find some very good products on this site i found these guys to have the best prices i have brought motors batteries esc from them

I'm taking a look at this Hobby City site. So if I use this ESC:

Can you guys reccomend me some motors? The "marine" motors don't seem to fit in my boat and there are a LOT of options.

Please reveal your hull, as many members are not able to access your site. The ESC is a fuse and the motor/prop /power choice is very important. If you are not capable of sending this info. Take a hike in the woods

Sorry guys. Didn't realize people could not access my site. I will try to provide as many details as I can, but am I new to this aspect of the hobby, so please bear with me. Here are some hull specs:

mono hull (the most common hull around...) I believe it's a Kyosho Viper.
                        front to back: 63 cm
                        left to right: 22 cm
                        540/550 sized motor needed

                        Here are pictures.

DON'T MIND THE ELECTRONICS IN THIS PICTURE!!

I've been looking around and doing some research on my own. I've been looking at a 60A boat ESC (from Hobby City)
For a motor, I was looking at the Feigao 540 L line. I have read that Feigao is a good brand. Since I need a 1/8" shaft, I can purchase either the 1755 kV motor or the 2371 kV motor. (Or, if you guys have other motor suggestions, let me know.)

That motor and ESC combination seems O.K. to me. If you expert guys have other thoughts, please let me know. Once again, I will use either a 7.2 V or 8.4 V pack.

I appreciate your continued help. Thank you for helping me out.

                        -Michael

Whoa ! Thanks for the pics but is there any chance to resize them a bit smaller.
It has been a while since I have seen a Kyosho viper and I forgot that it is a submerged prop drive. This will mean you will need to keep your prop size down to avoid loading the motor and killing the esc.
For fun running a L size motor on a 60A sounds o.k to me, as long as prop lightly.
Your Ni packs will be ok for a while then it is lipo time.
There are a few here who can give you more info on prop choice for a sub' drive.
If you get keen you can convert to a flex-drive, surface prop. I can help you with that bit.

don't mind Douggie, he can be a bit cranky at times.
